국문 초록
한국 암각화의 이해가 동북아시아 암각화의 맥락 속에서 살펴야 함은 양전리식 암각화에도 마찬가지로 적용된다. 양전리식 암각화는 시베리아와 몽골 그리고 북부중국에 일관되게 흐르는 태양신 숭배와 관련되며 이는 같은 시기 만들어진 한국의 청동기유물에서도 확인된다. 이 글은 한국 청동기문화에 많은 영향을 미치고 있고 동북아시아 암각화 분포상 중핵적인 위치를 차지하고 있는 알타이 지역의 암각화에서 한국암각화에 중요한 상징으로 등장하는 태양신적 요소가 어떻게 표현되고 있는가에 대한 현장론적 고찰이다.
알타이 지역은 크게 중국 알타이지구, 카자흐스탄 동부, 몽골 서부, 러시아 알타이공화국 등 네 곳으로 나뉘며 이번에 다루는 것은 러시아 알타이 공화국의 추야강 유역으로 한정된다.
추야강 유역의 암각화에 나타나는 태양의 상징은 다양한 형태로 나타난다. 동물의 뿔, 꼬리에 매달리기도 하고 몸통 속에 들어있기도 하다. 또 동물과 사람과 같은 공간에 태양이 다양한 위치에 등장하기도 한다. 이는 이세상의 모든 만물을 탄생시키고 생명을 부여한 태양을 자연과의 합일(合一)된 상태로 인식한 것으로 추정된다.
그러나 태양과 동물이 하나로 통합되어 신격화 되는 것은 시베리아에서 일반적으로 보이는 현상이며 특히 사슴은 태양의 상징으로 여겨졌다. 위의 네 곳의 알타이 지역 중에서 알타이공화국과 몽골 서부의 암각화는 특히 유사하며 이 두 지역의 암각화는 동쪽으로 미누신스크와 바이칼호 일대를 거쳐 연해주에 이르기까지 분포된 암각화들과 맥을 같이 한다. 또 태양신의 묘사도 표현상의 공통점을 지니면서 등장하고 있다.
그러나 추야강 유역의 암각화에서 태양이 동물의 몸 일부에 붙어서 등장하는 것은 몽골 등 알타이산 동부에서는 나타나지만 카자흐스탄이나 중국 알타이지구 등 알타이산 서쪽과 남쪽에서는 볼 수 없는 특이한 현상이다. 이는 카자흐스탄 등지에서 보이는 태양신의 얼굴묘사가 추야강 유역에서 보이지 않는 것과 함께 이 지역의 지역적 특성으로 보인다.
또한 이 지역의 태양신과 관련된 암각화의 연대는 아파나시에보 문화, 오쿠네보 문화기의 목축과 농경민들의 예술품에서 태양이 많이 등장하는 것과 관련되는 것으로 보이며 같은 청동기 시기의 것으로 추정된다. 알타이 지역의 태양신 암각화 중 스키타이 사슴으로 불려지는 사슴 암각화가 자주 등장하는 것도 이 암각화들이 청동기시대의 산물임을 말해주는 것이다.

영문 초록
The petroglyphs along the Chuya River in the Republic of Altay show the sun god and they have various patterns. Some are showing the sun god hanging on horns or tails of antelopes or oxen and some are showing it inside their bodies. When they are not physically connected, they are at least put together in the same space. The petroglyphs are the symbolization of the sun god being omni-present in nature. Since it gives life to all living forms on earth, it cannot be separated from nature.
The petroglyphs in the areas around the Altai Mountain have similar characteristics with the Chuya Steppe in the north of the northwest-southeast axis which is the main axis of the Altai Mountains, the Tsagaan Salaa-Baga Oigor Complex in Western Mongol, and the Tsagaan Gol region. On the other hand, those in the Altai District and Eastern Kazakhstan show some differences. Especially the petroglyphs in the Eastern Kazakhstan"s Tamgaly Valley and Taimaly-Tash have distinct differences with the geographical distance being the main factor.
It is noteworthy that the sun god apprears in the artifacts by both nomads and farmers of the Afanasyevo and Okunevo cultures. And the sun god petroglyphs in Taimaly-Tash and Tamgaly are said to have been made when the sun god cult was linked with the Bronze culture during the Andronovo culture. The antelopes appearing in relation with the sun god in the Altai petroglyphs are the Scythian ones and they also prove that the petroglyphs were made duing the Bronze Age.
However, the petroglyphs along the north side of the Altai Mountain have different patterns of the sun god. As said above, they are hanging on the horns or tails or animals. Some of them appear as separate circles or circles with sun rays around them. It is also the case with the petroglyphs in Western Mongol. However, unlike the west region, human figures with the sun"s face are quite rare. Therefore, it can be safe to say the sun god petroglyphs along the north side have their own unique characteristics while keeping similarities with other petroglyphs around the area.
