  This thesis presents case studies of 3 year-old children starting out in kindergarten. It focuses on how the behavior of the children change as they adjust to their new environment, forming new relationships with fellow peers. Relationships are an integral part of everyone"s lives and is one of the most important things that human experience can offer.
  In this study, I observed how children actually adjusted to their new lives in kindergarten and interpreted the results from a social transactional standpoint. In order to clarify the main points of the study, the following questions are how does a 3 year-old children develop a relationship with their peers as they adjust to their new life in kindergarten?
  1. What is the behavior of the child like in this process?
  2. What is the role of the peers in this process?
  The subjects used in this study were five children just starting out in a kindergarten in Ansan. They were chosen because they were thought to have no unusual difficulties adjusting to their new lives in kindergarten, and two teachers also participated in the study. The children were put through a special training program before entering kindergarten (2/21/2002 - 2/28/2002). The study was conducted from the beginning of the special training program until the end of the first semester (3/11/2002 - 7/12/2002). The children were observed three to four times a week for a total of 52 times. They were observed in person and by video. Each child was taped once a week (for an average of 15 times per child), and at the end of the study there were twenty tapes that were ninety minutes long.
  This study was conducted under the presumption that how children form relationships with their teachers and peers early on is important as they go through the kindergarten education process, and that those relationships become a substantial supportive foundation from which they can draw upon. This study closely examined those relationships, through field observation and personal interviews.
  The results of the study can be summarized as follows.
  First, the children successfully learned how to form relationship with their peers, who as peers can provide help and comfort to the children. In many ways, it seems that the closeness that the children feel from these relationship enables the children to form other satisfactory relationships and allows the children to become meaningful members of society.
  Second, The children were able to choose their friends on their own and create their own unique style of play. They were able to adjust to their own peer groups.
  This study therefore confirmed the fact that the teacher"s attitudes and beliefs about their role towards the children is important to the children"s growth.
  There needs to be further studies on the lives of kindergarten children and the role of the teacher, in the context of the children"s social ability and cultural position in our society.
