국문 초록

  『대학(大學)』은 삼강령(三綱領)과 팔조목(八條目)이라는 교육의 원리와 실천과정을 담고 있다. 삼강령은 삶의 기본 원리를 제공해 주었고 팔조목은 그 과정과 실천의 방식으로 유학적 질서를 유지하는 이론적 기반이 되었다. 팔조목은 ‘격물-치지-성의-정심-수신-제가-치국-평천하’라는 삶의 실천과정을 통해 인간의 개인적ㆍ사회적 성취를 모색하는 교육과 정치의 체계이다. 즉 개인의 인격 도야는 물론 사회적 책임감을 체득하는 양식을 보여준다. 이는 개인교육과 공동체교육, 그리고 문화의 전달과 창조라는 변증법적 조화를 추구하는 과정과도 통한다. 본 연구는 팔조목의 교육과정과 실천양식을 세밀하게 분석하고, 그 의미맥락을 현대 교육학적으로 풀이한 것이다. 그 결과, 단계적인 교육과정과 실천의 엄밀성, 교육의 체계와 그 유기체적 특성 등을 성찰할 수 있고, 그것은 개인의 인격적 조화와 완성, 사회적 책무성과 역할 수행의 차원에서 현대 교육학적으로 재해석할 수 있다. 아울러 교육의 단계와 효과, 방법적 기준, 교육실천의 원칙을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

  The Great Learning(大學) contains Three Doctrines(三綱領) and Eight Steps(or Eight Precepts; 八條目), which are the principles of education and the steps of practice, respectively. Three Doctrines represented the basic principles of living and Eight Steps represented the process of education thereof and also the ways of putting them into practice, which were the theoretical foundation in order to maintain the Confucian order.
  This paper analyzed and reviewed the contents and characteristics of Eight Steps as the process of education and the form of practice in a specific manner. Eight Steps is a system concerned with education and politics that seek human’s individual and social accomplishments through the form of practice, which is ‘Gyeongmul(格物)-Chiji(致知)-Seongui(誠意)-Jeongsim(正心)-Susin(修身)-Jega(齊家)-Chiguk(治國)-Pyeongcheonha (平天下).’
  Specifically, this system displays not only the person being cultivated but also a path to acquire a sense of social responsibility. This is also related to the process of pursuing dialectical harmony featuring individual education, the next step of which is community education, and thus leading to transmission and creation of culture. Through close analysis of educational process and the form of practice shown in Eight Steps, and the interpretation of which in the context of modern education, the phased educational process, organic characteristics, strictness in practice, and educational system, etc. can be well examined and identified, and such themes are able to be reinterpreted in light of contemporary education from the perspective of harmony and completion of an individual’s character, his/her social accountability and role performance. Also, the phase of education and the effects thereof, methodological criteria, and principles of education implementation can be confirmed.
