노울즈의 성인교육론에 대한 종합적 고찰 - 교육사상과 실천적 교육과정을 중심으로

국문 초록

  실천적으로 일반화되어 있는 개념인 평생교육(lifelong education)의 영역은 성인교육(adult education)에 대한 인식을 토대로 성장하기 시작했는데, 성인교육에 관한 이론적 연구가 심화되고 있기는 하나 학문적 근간이라 할 수 있는 사상과 철학에 관한 논의가 절대적으로 부족하다. 이는 ‘성인’이라는 대상을 학문적으로 인식 및 규명하지 못한 데에서 비롯된다할 수 있다. 성인에 대한 인식을 높이고, 성인의 학습권(right to learn)을 회복하기 위한 성인교육부문의 사상과 철학에 대한 연구는 성인교육학에 대한 기초적 토양을 제공하는 의미가 있다.
  본 논문에서는 성인교육의 이론과 실제를 정립하고 하나의 학문으로 체계화하는 데에 독보적 기여를 했다는 평을 받고 있는 노울즈의 생애와 사상적 배경을 비롯하여 성인교육론에 대해 집중 조명하였다. 특히 성인의 학습권에 대한 중요성과 이를 확보하기 위한 노력이 담겨있는 실천적 교육사상인 ‘안드라고지’의 배경과 내용을 중심으로 그 철학적 토대와 실천적 과정을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 노울즈는 성인의 자발성과 주도성에 주목하여 경험을 통해 축적한 지혜들을 주체적으로 해결해나갈 수 있도록 하기 위한 실질적이고 실천적인 교육의 과정과 방법을 제시하여, 인본주의와 실존주의 및 진보주의적인 교육사상이 어떻게 현장에서 구현될 수 있는지에 대한 함의를 제공하였다.

영문 초록

  The purpose of this study is to gain some suggestions for improvement adult and continuing education philosophy from the analysis on Knowles" thoughts and practices of adult education and learning. Lifelong education is practically generalized concept nowadays, and this is developed based on recognition of adult education. However, the concept of adult education is needed growth philosophically and theoritically. Although academic publications about adult education increase constantly, more studies should carry into the publications about thoughts and philosophy those are the academic groundworks in this field of study. It is necessary to rethink the ‘adult’ as an object of academic study. Studying thoughts and philosophy in adult education to raise awareness about ‘adults’ among people and to recover right to learn of adults, offer the academic foundation to andragogy. So Andagogists should review and reflect lots of thoughts and practices of thinkers and performers about adults education.
  This article review and analyze Knowles" thoughts and practices of adult education and learning that is evaluated to build up adult education theory and to systematize andragogy as a science. And this treat Knowles" practical thought of adults education, especially andragogy, and analyze philosophical foundation and practical process of that.
  The result of study, taking notice spontaneousness and directedness of adults, Knowles offers useful and practical process and methods of education to solve the problems of life through accumulation of experience. So Knowles" thoughts provide some implications to practice educational thought of humanism, existentialism and progressivism.
