국문 초록

지명은 한 지역의 지역성과 역사성을 파악하는 데 기초적인 자료이다. 나아가 지명은 사람들의 환경인식의 결과물이므로, 사람들이 장소와 지역, 그리고 경관을 어떻게 이해하고 판별하는 지를 규명하는 데 중요한 실마리를 제공할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 인식을 바탕으로, 경기도와 함경도의 마을명에 사용된 지명어 분석을 통하여 마을의 입지 특성 파악과 함께 전반적인 지역성을 비교하였다. 지명어 분석은 위치, 자연, 인문, 그리고 기타지명으로 분류하여, 그 대표적인 유형들의 빈도와 비중을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 위치 지명어를 통해 마을 입지로는 폐쇄적인 지형조건을 지닌 곳이 선호되었고, 함경도에서는 특히 일조조건을 고려한 향이 중시되었음을 확인하였다. 또한 경기도에서는 골짜기, 함경도에서는 평지가 마을입지로 많이 선택되었다는 것을 자연 지명어 분석을 통해 파악하였다. 한편 인문 및 기타 지명어를 통해서는 경기도와 함경도의 지역성을 파악할 수 있는데, 지역성 형성에는 국가의 핵심부와 변경이라는 위치적 특성이 가장 강하게 작용하였다.

영문 초록

The place names serve as one of the basic tools which can be used to analyze the locality and history of a area. With this in mind, this study analyzed village names in the Gyeonggi-do and Hamgyeong-do in order to identify the characteristics of village locations in each area and to compare the overall regional characteristics of the two provinces. As part of the process of analyzing place names, villages were categorized according to the source of their names, i.e.a location, or a physical or human reference etc., with the frequency and weight of each category subsequently estimated. This resulted in uncovering the fact that locations exhibited closed geographic conditions were preferred. In addition, the analysis of physical place names revealed that while valleys were preferred as village locations in the Gyeonggi-do, plains were preferred in the Hamgyeong-do. The analysis of the influence of human and other types of place names on the regional characteristics of Gyeonggi-do and Hamgyeong-do revealed that their locative characteristics, namely the former’s central position and the latter’s location on the margins of the state, played a strong role in the formation of the regional characteristics of each province.
