, a film directed by Park Chan Wook, is an action thriller. But it is also a human drama that discusses the deep inside and memory extinction of man by using retaliation and incest as motifs. This study reviewed the movie through narrative and discourse analyses to get the following results. The narrative of the film has a plot regarding karma that is developed from chasing to revelation, self-punishment and to conclusion, rather than that as in a thriller which is characterized with chasing and criminal punishment. It illustrates the process of retaliation in form of a game in which the victim and the assaulter are reversed with each other. Incest and punishment are key motifs of the reverse in which two main characters, Lee Woo-Jin and Oh Dae-Soo violate the taboo, or incest and punish themselves. In the plot, the abyss of man is revealed, positioning the film text as a sort of human drama. The discourse analysis of the movie focuses on changes in the point of view and distance found in the work. Unlike in other movies, the text of the film keeps using character's point of view, but has difference in the focalizer between its early and later parts. In the early part of the film, Oh Dae Soo becomes a focalizer as an outside narrator reflecting his point of view in the movie. In its later part, however, the movie is developed mainly from Lee Woo Jin's point of view. This is substituted by Oh Dae Soo's point of view at the end of the film. These changes also bring changes in distance between the movie viewers and Oh Dae Soo and between the viewers and Lee Woo Jin. Changes in the point of view of the film text are closely related with two aspects, memory and forgetfulness. They ultimately seek to show Oh Dae Soo and Lee Woo Jin's sufferings from their memories to the movie viewers more clearly. Such sufferings are pains experienced by taboo breakers who have been forced to remember socialized and culturally acceptable things. Shown at the end of the movie, making forgotten pains by removing memory through hypnosis cannot avoid being interpreted as 'self- effacement' in which the sensitivity and identity of man are extinguished.
