영문 초록

A major element of textuality is cohesion. A text is not a text unless it coheres But different text types do not cohere in the same way. According to Frawely&Smith(1983), different genres use other textual devices differently. It is reasonable to assume that different modes of discourse will connect in different ways. So the purpose of this paper is two folds: one is to investigate the frequency and distribution of conjunction and the other to examine the cohesion of conjunction among four discourse types. I have studied 12,000 word samples of narrative, descriptive, expository, and argumentative. My results show that the distribution of conjunction in these discourse types vary in a statistically significant way and that the conjunctions playa major role in structuring these different text types.
