불교 윤리적 관점에서 바라보는 동물실험과 찬·반의 갈등

국문 초록

21세기는 애완동물의 시대라 할 수 있을 만큼 애완동물을 키우는 가구 수는 해마다 크게 증가하며, 동물에 대한 인식도 ‘애완’의 단계를 넘어 ‘반려’의 지위로 올라서고 있다. 이 같은 동물에 대한 인식 변화와 함께 더욱 대두되는 것이 동물권에 대한 문제로, 이 가운데는 동물실험에 대한 윤리적 갈등이 포함되어 있다. 동물실험과 이를 둘러싼 찬․반의 대립은 이미 오래전부터 있었으나, 근대 들어서며 대중적으로 불거져 본격적으로 논의되기 시작했다. 그러나 유용성과 대안의 부재 등 현실적 입장과 동물과 인간의 평등성을 주장하는 윤리적 입장은 현재까지도 절충점을 찾지 못하고 많은 윤리학자의 논쟁을 불러일으키고 있다. 최근에는 동물실험을 둘러싼 견해에 대해 학자들의 의견을 분석한 보고서가 연구되는가 하면, 종교학계에서도 각 계의 교리적 관점에서 동물실험을 둘러싼 해법을 연구하는 논문이 발표되고 있다. 이같은 사회문제에 종교가 관심을 가지는 이유는 종교가 지닌 사회화나 교육의 기능 때문일 것이다. 주지하다시피 종교는 사회와 함께 발생하고 발전하였으며, 구성원들의 윤리적․철학적 교육을 암묵적으로 담당해왔다. 즉, 사회구성원을 해치거나 사회제도에 반하는 교리를가진 종교는 세월의 흐름에 따라 자연스레 외면되어 소멸되었다. 이에 본고는 동물실험과 이를 둘러싼 찬성과 반대의 대립을 불교 교리에 배대하여 윤리적 관점을 고찰하고자한다. 불교는기본적으로 ‘불살생(不殺生)’을 중요 계율로 삼고있으나, 동물실험과 이를 둘러싼 찬․반의 대립은 이러한 단편적이고 결정론적인 계율로는 적절한 타협점을 찾을 수 없다. 이에 붓다초전법륜의 하나인 연기사상과 실천행을 강조하는 『화엄경』의 바라밀사상에 비추어 동물실험에 배대하였다. 연구결과 동물실험과 이를 둘러싼 갈등의 대립은 어느 한 단면만을 주장하는 이차원적 이론을 실천행에 적용한 한계가 있었음을 알 수 있다. 연기법칙에 의거한 다차원적 인과의 이해와 이를 토대로 한 실천행을 제시함으로써 동물실험에 대한 윤리적 갈등에서 벗어날 이론적 적립을 세울 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

The 21st century is an era of pets, and the number of households raising pets increases significantly every year, Awareness of animals is also rising to the status of 'companion' beyond the stage of 'pet'. Along with this change in perception of animals, the issue of animal rights is even more emerging, including ethical conflicts over animal testing. Animal testing and the confrontation between the pros and cons surrounding it had already existed for a long time, but in the modern era, it became popular and began to be discussed in earnest. However, the realistic position, such as usefulness and lack of alternatives, and the ethical position that insists on the equality of animals and humans have not been able to find a compromise until now, and arouse debate among many ethicists. Recently, reports analyzing scholars' opinions on the views surrounding animal testing have been studied,while papers have also been published in religious academia to study solutions surrounding animal testing from the doctrinal perspective of each system. The reason why religion is interested in such social problems may be because of the function of education it has. Religion arose and developed with society, and has been implicitly in charge of ethical and philosophical education of its members. In other words, religions that harm members of society or have doctrines that go against the social system naturally turned away and disappeared over time. Accordingly, this content seeks to consider an ethical perspective by disposing of animal experiments and the confrontation of pros and cons surrounding them to Buddhist doctrines. Buddhism basically uses "fire and death" as an important discipline, but the confrontation between animal testing and the pros and cons over it cannot find an appropriate compromise with these fragmentary and deterministic discipline. Accordingly, it was substituted for animal experiments in light of the Baramil idea of 『華嚴經』 which emphasizes acting ideas and practice, one of the Buddha's early teachings. As a result of the study, it can be seen that there is a limit to the application of two-dimensional theory and practice that claims only one side of animal experimentation and the conflict surrounding it. It is expected that theo-retical accumulation will be established to escape from ethical conflicts over animal testing by presenting a multidimensional understanding of causality based on the law of acting and practical behavior based on it.
