대한불교조계종 재 의례의 선택적 수용(受容)과 함의(含意): 관음시식 의례를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문은 조선 후기 이후 천도 의례에 나타난 변용과 습합 현상을 그 이전의 불교 의례와 비교하여 살펴보고, 관음시식(觀音施食)의 선택적 수용을 검토함으로써 대한불교조계종이 찬집한 통일법요집에 그러한 변화가 어떻게 반영되고 있는지에 대한 고찰과 그 함의를 논의하였다. 먼저 관음시식을 중심으로 한 의례 관련 선행연구들이 주로 의례의 연원에 집중되어 있음을 확인하였고,『 대정신수대장경(大正新修大藏經)』과 『만신찬대일본속장경(卍新纂大日本續藏經)』, 『한국불교전서(韓國佛敎全書)』안에 포함된 관련 문헌들을 검토하였다. 그 결과, 중국에서 찬집한 의례집들은 이전 시기의 의례집을 보완하고 계승하는 경향이 있는데 비해, 한국에서 찬집한 의례집들은 시대적, 문화적 상황에 맞춰 다양한 변화가 나타나고 있음을 확인하였다. 이후 『운수단가가』, 『작법귀감』,『석문의범』, 『통일법요집』 등의 비교를 통해서 한국의 관음시식 의례가 역사적인 흐름을 따라서 선택되고, 편집되어 오늘에 이르고 있음을 밝혔다. 그리고 이러한 변용이 역사적으로 존재하였던 각 종단의 종풍(宗風)을 드러내고 정체성을 상징적으로 드러내는 것임을 인식할 수 있었다. 이런 맥락에서 대한불교조계종이 발간한 통일법요집은 현대에 합당한 의례문을 집대성하고 있다고 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the phenomenon of transformation and con-vergence in the ‘Cheondo’ ritual (rituals for consoling the wandering souls) since the late Joseon Dynasty by comparing it with Buddhist rituals before it, and by examining the selective acceptance of the ‘Kwan-eum-si-sik’ (觀音施食), discusses how such changes are re-flected in the ‘Tongil-Bubyojip’ (Unified Buddhist Ritual Book) com-piled by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and its implications. First, we found that previous studies on rituals centered on the ‘Kwan-eum-si-sik’ mainly focused on the origins of the ritual, and we reviewed the relevant texts contained in the ‘Taisyou shinsyu dai-zoukyou’ (大正新修大藏經), the ‘Manji Shinsan Dainihon Zokuzokyo’ (卍新纂大日本續藏經), and the ‘Hangukbulgyojeonseo’ (Complete Works of Korean Buddhism, 韓國佛敎全書). The results showed that the ritual books compiled in China tend to complement and inherit the ritual books of previous periods, while the ritual books compiled in Korea show various changes according to the historical and cultural circumstances. Subsequent comparisons of the ‘Unsudangga’ (雲水壇謌訶), the ‘Jagbupguigam’ (The Best Exemplar for Ritual Procedure, 作法龜鑑), the ‘Sukmooneuibhum’ (釋門儀範), and the ‘Tongil-Bubyojip’ re-vealed that the rituals of Korean ‘Kwan-eum-si-sik’ ceremonies have been selected, edited, and adapted along historical lines to arrive at the present day. We were able to recognize that these variations reveal the style of each historically existing Buddhist Order and symbolize its identity. In this context, the ‘Tongil-Bubyojip’ published by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism can be evaluated as a compilation of ritual texts appropriate for modern times.
