디아스포라 작가의 소설에서 호랑이 메타포의 활용 양상 - 태 켈러, 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』과 김주혜, 『작은 땅의 야수들』을 중심으로

국문 초록

한국계 미국인 작가 태 켈러의 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』, 김주혜의 『작은 땅의 야수들』은 ‘해와 달이 된 오누이’, ‘단군신화’, ‘효자 효랑이’ 등의 설화 속 호랑이 메타포를 전유하거나 재전유한다. 그 활용 양상을 연구한 결과는 다음 다섯 가지 범주로 정리된다. 우선, 호랑이는 근현대 한국인이 겪은 아픔의 역사이자 분단되지 않은 한반도를 표상한다. 역사는 아무리 어둡고 슬플지라도 갇혀 있기보다 이야기되기를 원하고, 분단된 한반도는 호랑이의 멸종에 비유된다. 두 번째, 호랑이는 사신(死神)을 상징한다. 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』에서 할머니는 죽음이라는 새로운 단계의 인생 여정을, 릴리는 성장이라는 고통스러운 과업을 성취해내기 위하여 사신과 소통하며 자기 몫의 입사식을 통과해야 한다. 『작은 땅의 야수들』에서 정호는 사형 집행을 앞두고 호랑이 사신의 등에 올라타고 시간의 모래 속에 파묻히는 꿈을 꾼다. 세 번째, 호랑이의 노란 눈과 영통(靈通)한 사람은 에고의 껍질을 깨고 타자를 이해하는 제3의 눈을 얻는다. 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』에서 릴리는 할머니의 임종 침상 앞에서 호랑이의 눈을 자기 내면에 받아들이며 죽음과 함께하는 삶의 비의(秘義)를 깨닫는다. 『작은 땅의 야수들』에서 남정호 부자(父子)와 호랑이는 죽음의 공포를 넘은 영통의 세계에서 궁극의 인을 실행한다. 네 번째, 호랑이는 그림자의 파괴적 에너지이면서 원형적 심혼(心魂)으로서의 아니마이다. 『호랑이를 덫에 가두면』에서 릴리가 ‘조용한 아시아 여자아이’라는 페르소나를 뚫고 나오기 위해서는 그림자의 힘이 필요했다. 『작은 땅의 야수들』에서 호랑이는, 정호와 옥희가 개성화 여정에서 무한히 접근해야 할 신화적 어머니를 표상한다. 마지막으로 호랑이는 삶에 의미와 목적을 부여하고 치유와 성장으로 나아가는 자기서사의 재구성에 필수적인 원형 화소를 제공한다. 자기서사 재구성의 길잡이 역할을 해준 호랑이 덕분에 릴리는 두 세계를 품은 자신을 수용하고 내면의 호랑이를 길들일 수 있고, 정호는 외로움과 두려움을 떨치고 의로운 호랑이라는 자기 원형에 끝없이 다가가는 삶을 산다.

영문 초록

Korean American writer Tae Keller's When You Trap a Tiger and Juhea Kim’s Beasts of a Little Land appropriate or re-appropriate tiger metaphors in tales, such as “The Siblings Who Became the Sun and the Moon,”“Dangun Myth,”and “a tiger of filial devotion.” The results of this study on this metaphor patterns can be summarized into the following five categories: First, the tiger represents the history of the pain experienced by modern and contemporary Koreans and the undivided Korean Peninsula. History, however dark and sad, needs to be told rather than bottled up, and the divided Korean Peninsula is likened to the extinction of tigers. Second, the tiger symbolizes the god of death. In When You Trap a Tiger, the grandmother and Lily communicate with the god of death to perform the painful task of moving forward. In Beasts of a Little Land, JungHo dreams of being buried in the sand of time at the back of a tiger reaper before execution. Third, a person who communicates spiritually with the tiger's yellow eyes can break the ego’s shell and obtain a third eye to understand the other. In When You Trap a Tiger, Lily accepts the tiger's eyes in her inner self before her grandmother's dying bed and realizes the meaning of life through death. In Beasts of a Little Land, the protagonist, JungHo, and his father practice ultimate benevolence in spiritual communication beyond the fear of death. Fourth, the tiger is used figuratively as the destructive energy of a shadow or prototypical anima. In When You Trap a Tiger, Lily needs Shadow power to break through the persona of the "Quiet Asian Girl." In Beasts of a Little Land, the tiger represents a mythical eternal mother to whom JungHo and Jade must approach their individuation process approximately. Finally, the tiger gives meaning and purpose to life and provides archetypical motifs for reconstructing self-narratives, moving toward healing and growth. Thanks to the tiger’s guidance, Lily can embrace herself and tame her inner tiger. JungHo lives a life of constantly approaching his archetype of a “Righteous Tiger,” overcoming loneliness and fear.
