국문 초록

원어민 영어교사와 비원어민 영어교사는 정확하지 않은 용어로 여겨져 왔으며 여전히 이러한 용어를 사용하는 이들은 차별적인 용어를 사용한다고 해서 비난을 받을 수 있다고 여긴다. 그럼에도 불구하고, ‘원어민 화자’와 ‘원어민이 아닌 화자’와 같은 상위 개념적 용어들은 연구자들과 교사들의 언어 사용에서 지속되는 듯 하다. 본 연구에서는 NEST들과 non-NEST 간에 교수 행위의 차이점을 살펴본 다음, 그러한 차이점에 대한 원인을 찾아본다. 원어민/비원어민 구분의 틀에서는 이상적인 원어민 영어교사와 이상적인 비원어민 영어교사는 다른 방향에서 오게되지만 결과적으로는 아주 가까이에 있게 된다. 두 집단의 교사들은 각각의 방법으로 똑같이 유용한 목표를 수행한다. 그러므로 이상적인 학교에서는 원어민 영어교사와 비원어민 영어교사가 서로의 장점과 단점을 보완해 주면서 좋은 균형을 유지해야 한다. 적절한 혼합 비율이 주어지면, 여러 가지 형태의 협동이 가능하며, 학습자들은 그러한 상호교류를 통해서만 도움을 받을 수 있다.

영문 초록

The controversy over native versus non-native distinction has also been brought to bear on language pedagogy and ELT methodology. The“native English-speaking teacher”(NEST) and its opposite, the “non-native English-speaking teacher”(non-NEST), has been deemed incorrect phrases, and those who still use them can expect to be accused of employing discriminatory language. Nevertheless, the superordinate terms “native speaker” and “non-native speaker” seem to persist in the language use of researchers and teachers alke. This paper attempts to do just that: it strives to examine differences in teaching behavior between NESTs and non-NESls, and then specify the causes of those differences. Within the framework of the native/ non-native division, the ideal NEST and the ideal non-NEST arrive from different directions but eventually stand quite close to each other. Both groups of teachers serve equally useful purposes in their own ways. In an ideal school, therefore, there should be a good balance of NESTs and non-NESTs, who complement each other in their strengths and weaknesses. Given a favorable mix, various forms of collaboration are possible, and learners can only gain from such cross-fertilization.
