국민정체성 인식과 접촉 경험이 북한이탈주민에 대한 태도에 미치는 영향: 다문화교육적 접근의 필요성

국문 초록

본 연구는 남한주민의 국민정체성과 북한이탈주민에 대한 사회적 거리감의 관계를 살펴보고, 둘의 관계가 북한이탈주민과의 접촉경험에 따라 달라지는지 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울대학교 통일평화연구원의 2018 통일의식조사 자료를 활용하여 최소자승 회귀분석을 시행하였다. 분석 결과 첫째, 남한주민의 국민정체성 인식은 북한이탈주민에 대한 사회적 거리감에 유의미한 영향을 미치며, 구체적으로 동일 혈통과 조상을 국민의 자격 요건으로 삼는 민족형 혹은 혼합형인 사람은 혈통을 중요한 요건으로 보지 않는 다원형 혹은 시민형인 사람에 비해 북한이탈주민과의 거리감을 더 크게 느낀다. 둘째, 남한주민의 북한이 탈주민과의 직접 접촉은 북한이탈주민에 대한 사회적 거리감을 줄이지 못하는 반면 북한 소설, 영화 등을 통한 준사회적 접촉은 북한이탈주민에 대한 사회적 거리감을 줄인다. 셋째, 북한이탈주민과의 준사회적 접촉 경험은 혼합형인 사람의 북한이탈주민에 대한 사회적 거리감을 유의미하게 줄인다. 이러한 분석을 토대로 본 연구는 남북 간의 정치, 경제, 문화적 차이가 심화되고 있는 상황에서 북한이탈주민과의 공존과 화합을 모색하기 위해 다문화 역량을 함양할 수 있는 교육이 필요함을 제안하였다. 또한 혼합형 국민정체성 인식이 북한 이탈주민에 대한 배타적 태도로 이어지지 않도록 매체를 활용하여 북한이탈주민과 접촉 경험을 제공할 것을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines how national identity is associated with social distance toward North Korean defectors (hereafter defectors) and how contacts with defectors mediate this relationship. Using a nationally representative survey, we find that national identity is significantly related to attitudes toward defectors in that individuals who stress a common bloodline and ancestry (i.e., ethnic or multiple identity) are more likely to show exclusive attitudes toward defectors than their counterparts who do not (i.e., civic identity or pluralists). Additionally, we also find that while direct contacts with defectors do not lessen social distance, being exposed to North Korean films and novels (parasocial contact) is significantly related to lower social distance toward defectors. Lastly, the positive effect of parasocial contact is significant only for people who hold the multiple identity. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
