Examining Gender Stereotypes: Gender Preferences in Subject and Form of Children’s Drawings

국문 초록

본 사례 연구는 혼합 방법에 기초하여 아동 그림에서의 주제 및 형식적 표현에 대한 성별 차이를 20년 전 수행된 Tuman(1999)의 연구와 비교하여 분석하였다. 연구를 위해 뉴욕 브루클린의 초등학교 4학년 40명(남녀 각 20명, 평균 연령 10세)을 대상자로 삼았다. 연구 참여자들은 통념적으로 남녀가 선호하는 관심사와 태도가 반영된 내러티브를 듣고, 본인들이 원하는 이야기 속 장면을 레터사이즈 종이에 연필 및 색 마커를 활용하여 그렸다. 참여자들 의 그림들은 Tuman의 48개 주제 및 형식적 표현 특성의 평가 기준에 의거하여 분석되었고, 참여자 4명과의 면담이 진행되었다. 양적 및 질적 연구 결과는 20년 전 Tuman의 연구 결과와 확연한 차이를 드러냈다. 48개의 주제 및 형식적 표현 특성 가운데 성 차이를 드러낸 것은 그림의 표현 주제와 다양한 색의 표현뿐이었다. 이는 Tuman의 연구와 비교하였을 때 주제와 형식적 표현 특성들에서 성 차이가 매우 줄어들었음을 시사한다. 이러한 결과는 다양성을 촉구하는 미디어 및 중성화 교육의 사회 문화적 영향에서 기인하는 것으로 여겨진다.

영문 초록

This mixed methods case study aimed to explore gender-based preferences in subject and form of children's drawings, and compared the results to Tuman's study from two decades ago. The study was conducted with 40 fourth-grade students (20 boys and 20 girls) from an elementary school in Brooklyn, New York. The participants were asked to draw their favorite scene after listening to a story that promoted stereotypical gender interests and attitudes, using pencils and color markers on letter-sized paper. The results from the quantitative and qualitative data showed significant differences from Tuman's research, with only subject matter and color variation reflecting gender differences among the 48 variables of subject and form. Hence, the findings reflected an overall decrease in gender-preferred style regarding conceptual content and formal visual characteristics from twenty years ago. Results of the study suggests that socio-cultural changes, such as media and gender-neutral education that promote diversity, might have influenced the current gender-based preferences in children's drawings.
