국문 초록

데카르트는 『성찰』의 부록인 『반박과 대답』에서 신 자신으로부터 신의 존재를 증명한다. 여기서 핵심적인 역할을 맡고 있는 개념이 자기 원인(causa sui)이다. 피조물처럼, 신도 존재하기 위해 원인이 있어야 한다는 것. 그리고 그 원인은 신 자신이라는 것이 데카르트가 제출한 자기 원인에 대한 견해이다. 그런데 자기 원인은 그 자체로 모순적이다. 첫 번째, 신을 자기 원인으로 규정할 경우, 신은 자신의 원인이자 결과가 된다. 동일한 것이 원인이자 결과인 것은 인과율의 법칙에 어긋난다. 두 번째, 신이 존재하기 위해 원인이 필요하다는 사실은, 신의 완전성에 위배 된다. 『성찰』의 반론가인 카테루스와 아르노도, 이 점에 대해 의문을 품었고 그래서 신의 자기 원인을 소극적인 의미로 파악하고자 했다. 즉, 신은 다른 것으로부터 있지 않다는 의미에서 자신으로부터 있다고 이해해야 한다. 그리고 그들의 주장은 신은 존재하기 위해 원인이 필요하지 않다는 전통적인 견해와 합치한다. 우리는 이 글에서 자기 원인 개념이 품고 있는 대립을 이해하기 위하여 먼저, 카테루스와 아르노의 반론을 분석한다. 그리고 학자들의 반론에 대한 데카르트의 대답을 재구성함으로써, 자기 원인이 형상인이자 신의 무한한 힘이라는 사실을 밝힌다. 이를 통해 데카르트의 신 존재 증명에서 주목받지 못했던 자기 원인의 면모가 새롭게 드러날 것이다.

영문 초록

In the appendix to the Meditations, Objections and Replies, Descartes attempts to proves the existence of God from God himself. The concept of self-causation(causa sui) plays an important role here. According to Descartes, God, like creatures, must have a cause in order to exist, and that cause is God himself. But self-causation is itself a contradiction in terms. First, if God is self-causing, then God is both cause and effect. The same thing being both cause and effect violates the law of causality. Second, the fact that God needs a cause in order to exist violates the perfection of God. Meditations’ objectors, Caterus and Arnauld, also questioned this point, and so sought to understand God's self-causation in a negative sense. In other words, God is understood to be from himself in the sense that he is not from something else. And their argument is consistent with the traditional view that God does not need a cause to exist. In this article, we will first analyze the objections of Caterus and Arnauld in order to understand the conflict over the concept of self-causation. We then reconstruct Descartes' response to the scholastics' objections, revealing that the self-cause is both the formal cause and the infinite power of God. This will shed new light on a neglected aspect of self-causation in Descartes' proof of God's existence.
