이 논고는 스토아 자연학 체계화 과정에서 크뤼시포스가 도입, 발전시킨 ‘프네우마(pneuma) 긴장 운동’의 의미를 추적, 해석하여 스토아적 유물론에 있어 ‘긴장 운동(tonikē kinēsis)’의 역할과 함의를 재조명한다. 스토아 자연학에서 제시되는 ‘긴장 운동’을 통해 이해되는 ‘불-공기 구성체로서의 프네우마’는 ‘뜨거움’과 ‘차가움’이라는 상반적 성질을 자신 안에 ‘함께’ 갖고 있으며, ‘팽창 운동’과 ‘수축 운동’을 ‘동시에’ 한다. 이러한 프네우마 긴장 운동의 동시적 양방향 운동은 사물의 실체성과 성질을 구성하면서 스토아 자연학에서 물체적 능동 근원의 작동 메커니즘을 제공한다. 긴장 운동 작동 메커니즘의 구성을 통해 크뤼시포스는 능동 근원(즉, ‘신(theos)’)의 물체성의 의미와 위상을 명료화하고 스토아적 유물론을 확립시킨다. ‘프네우마의 긴장 운동’은, 크뤼시포스가 당대의 생물학적 개념인 ‘프네우마’ 개념을 스토아 자연학에 도입하여 우주적 ‘프네우마’ 개념으로 발전시키는 데 있어 발판 역할을 한 핵심 설명 장치이다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the Stoic “tensional motion (tonikē kinēsis)”, which is the simultaneous movement of pneuma in opposite directions. It highlights the influence of “tensional motion” on Stoic corporealism. Understood through “tensional motion,” “pneuma as a fire-air structure” contains two constitutive powers, i.e., “hot” and “cold,” which lead to the simultaneous occurrence of expansion and contraction, i.e., the simultaneous inward and outward movements. Theses movements constitute substantiality and quality of things, i.e., the function of the corporeal active principle of Stoic physics. Through the construction of the tensional movement mechanism, Chrysippus clarifies the meaning and status of the corporeality of the active principle (God), and establishes Stoic corporealism. The “tensional motion of pneuma” is an explanatory device that serves as the foundation for Chrysippus to introduce the concept of pnuema, which is a biological concept of the time, into Stoic physics and develop it into a concept of cosmic pneuma.
