『순수이성비판』의 두 가지 규제적 원리

국문 초록

『순수이성비판』에서 규제적 원리에 대한 칸트의 주장은 이중적인 측면에서 비일관적인 것처럼 보인다. 우선 변증론의 두 부록들이 각각 다른 종류의 원리들을 이성의 규제적 원리들로 제시한다는 점에서 두 부록들 사이의 비일관성이 나타난다. 또한 동일한 규제적 원리들이 『순수이성비판』에서는 이성의 원리로 규정되는 데에 반해서 『판단력비판』에서는 판단력의 원리로 규정된다는 점에서, 『순수이성비판』과 『판단력비판』 사이의 비일관성이 나타난다. 이 논문에서 우리는 이런 비일관성의 문제가 단지 표면적일 뿐이며, 『순수이성비판』 내적으로나 외적으로나, 규제적 원리에 대한 칸트의 입장에 심각한 문제를 야기하지 않는다고 논증한다. 이를 위해 우리는 우선 우리가 다룰 문제를 간략히 개관한 다음, II장에서 지성과 이성 그리고 판단력의 관계를 일반적으로 규명한다. 여기서 우리는 지성과 더불어 이성은 ‘판단하는 능력(Vermögen)’인 상위의 인식 능력을 구성하며, 넓은 의미로 이해될 경우 이 ‘판단하는 능력’은 판단을 실행하는 힘(Kraft)인 판단력을 포괄한다고 주장한다. 이어지는 III장은 이성의 논리적 기능과 선험적 이념들의 유래를 검토하고, 넓은 의미의 ‘판단하는 능력’으로 이해되는 이성이 어떻게 판단력의 기능을 포괄하는지 확인한다. 이를 통해 우선 우리는 둘째 부록의 규제적 원리들 뿐만 아니라 첫째 부록의 규제적 원리들도 넓은 의미의 ‘판단하는 능력’인 이성의 원리들로 정당하게 규정될 수 있음을 주장한다. 나아가 우리는 첫째 부록의 규제적 원리들을 『판단력비판』에서 판단력의 원리들로 규정한 것은 근본적인 칸트 입장의 변화나 수정에서 비롯한 것이 아닌 규제적 원리에 대한 칸트 논의의 초점 변화에서 비롯한 것임을 보인다. 마지막 IV장은 변증론의 두 부록들에서 제시된 두 종류의 규제적 원리들이 모두 이성에 속하는 원리로서 상호 의존적임을 간략히 확인한다.

영문 초록

Kant’s arguments for the regulative principles in the Critique of Pure Reason seem inconsistent in two aspects. On the one hand, the inconsistency appears between the two appendices of the Dialectic, as each presents different kinds of principles as regulative principles of reason. On the other hand, it is observed between the Critique of Pure Reason and the Critique of the Power of Judgment because the same regulative principles are ascribed to reason in the first Critique, but to the power of judgment in the third Critique. In this paper we argue that this problem of inconsistency is only superficial and does not pose a serious problem to Kant's position on the regulative principle, either internally or externally, in the Critique of Pure Reason. To this end, we first briefly outline the problem we are dealing with, and then, in Chapter II, we generally investigate the relationship between the understanding, reason, and the power of judgment. Here, we claim that reason, together with the understanding, constitutes the higher cognitive faculties which is ‘the capacity(Vermögen) to judge’, and if understood in a broad sense, this 'capacity to judge' encompasses the power of judgment which is the power(Kraft) to actualize it. In chapter III, we examine the logical function of reason and the origin of transcendental ideas, and confirm how reason, understood as 'the capacity to judge' in a broad sense, encompasses the function of the power of judgment. Through this, we first argue that the regulative principles, not only of the second appendix, but also of the first appendix, can be legitimately attributed to reason insofar as it is broadly understood as such a capacity to judge. Furthermore, we show that what led Kant to ascribe the regulative principles of the first appendix to the power of judgment in the third Critique was not a fundamental change or revision of his position, but rather a focal change of his discussion of the regulative principles. Finally, Chapter IV concludes by briefly confirming that the two kinds of regulative principles presented in the two appendices of the Dialectic are mutually dependent as principles belonging together to reason.
