호주 女선교사의 독립운동

국문 초록

본 연구는 일제강점기 한국독립운동 과정에 독립운동을 실천한 호주 여선교사- 이사벨라 멘지스, 마가렛 데이비스, 데이지 호킹 3인의 독립운동가 서훈추서를 위한 자료조사 및 서훈 과정을중심으로 살펴보았다. 호주 여선교사는 부산 경남지역에서 선교활동, 의료활동, 교육활동뿐만 아니라 영남 최초 여성근대교육기관 ‘부산진일신여학교’를 설립하여 여성해방공간의 역사를 열었다. 그 기반이 일제강점기 선교사와 학생, 교사의 한국독립운동으로 나아가는 의식확장과 교육기반이되었으며, 일제에 저항하여 독립운동의 현장에 서게 했다. 호주 여선교사 발굴과정은 2019년부터2021년 하반기까지 조사연구가 진행되었고 독립운동 진술자료, 투옥자료, 일본국무성자료, 미국영사관 자료, 호주선교사 보고서 자료 및 선교사 일지 등을 토대로 조사하였다. 3인의 호주여선교사는 1919년 부산 3.11만세운동에서 학생, 교사와 함께 태극기를 제작하고 만세시위에 참여했다. 또한 일본경찰에 의해 체포, 구금, 감금되었으나 외국인 신분으로 불구속 기소되었다. 부산진일신여학교의 설립자 멘지스, 교장 데이비스, 교사 호킹의 헌신적인 독립활동의 자료추적과 발굴자료기록을 토대로 서훈을 신청하였고, 2022년 3월 1일 멘지스(건국포장), 데이비스(애족장), 호킹(건국포장)의 서훈을 받았다. 호주인으로 최초 서훈을 받은 호주여선교사 3인의 독립운동 공적과 명예회복은 한국과 호주의 보훈역사, 보훈외교의 사례로 의미를 가지며, 향후 무관심 영역에 있는외국인 선교사 발굴의 확장이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study focused on the data survey and decoration process for the ordination of three independence activists, Australian missionaries-Isabella Menzies, Margaret Davis, and Daisy Hawking, who practiced the independence movement in the Korean independence movement process in the Japanese colonial era. The Australian female missionary opened the history of women's liberation space by establishing the first modern women's educational institution in Yeongnam, as well as missionary activities, medical activities, and educational activities in Busan and Gyeongnam. The foundation became the foundation for the expansion of consciousness and education of Japanese colonial era missionaries, students, and teachers to the Korean independence movement, and stood at the site of the independence movement against Japan. The Australian missionary discovery process was conducted from 2019 to the second half of 2021 and was conducted based on independence movement statement data, imprisonment data, Japanese Ministry of State, U.S. consulate data, Australian missionary report data, and missionary journals. The three Australian missionaries were students at the March 11th Movement in Busan in 1919. He produced the national flag with the teacher and participated in the hurrah demonstration. He was also arrested, detained, and detained by the Japanese police, but was indicted without detention as a foreigner. Based on the data tracking and excavation records of dedicated independent activities by the founders Menzies, principal Davis, and teacher Hawking of Busanjin Ilshin Girls' School, he applied for a medal, and on March 1, 2022, he received medals from Belle Menzies, Margaret Davis, Daisy Hocking. The restoration of the achievements and honor of the three Australian female missionaries, who were first decorated as Australians, is meaningful as examples of veterans' history of Korea and Australia, and it is necessary to expand the discovery of foreign missionaries in the area of indifference in the future.
