자연화된 ‘가족’의 서사와 ‘가족’이라는 굴레 : 구전이야기 〈오뉘 힘내기〉와 〈나무꾼과 선녀〉 속 ‘어머니의 음식’ 모티프를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 글은 자연화된 ‘가족’이라는 범주에 관한 서사로서 ‘어머니의 음식’이라는 모티프가 나타나는 구전이야기를 분석한다. 사회적 구성물로서 ‘가족’은 인구 정책과 통치, 젠더와 섹슈얼리티 및 재생산, 장애와 정상신체주의 등 ‘정상성’의 규범이 (재)생산되는 제도적 기반이 되어 왔다. 이러한 ‘가족’ 범주의 규범적 속성에 주목하여, 구전이야기를 통해 ‘가족’의 성립과 유지에 관한 사회적 상상력이 형상화된 양상을 탐구한다. ‘오뉘 힘내기’와 ‘나무꾼과 선녀’ 이야기에 등장하는, 자식들이 자신의 문제에 열중하고 있는 가운데 갑자기 등장해 음식을 권하는 어머니의 존재는 해당 이야기를 ‘부모-자식’이라는 가족 관계 구도에 대한 상징적 서사로 해석할 필요성을 제기한다. 이야기 속 어머니는 그가 자식들에게 권하는 ‘음식’과 동일시된 존재로, 오로지 자식들이 갈등 끝에 그 음식을 받아먹게 하는 것으로 기능을 다한다. 이때 어머니와 어머니의 음식은 자식들을 피할 수 없는 딜레마에 빠트리는데, 어머니가 권하는 음식을 먹으면 파멸하리라는 것을 알면서도 거절할 수 없다는 사실이다. 결국 어머니의 권유를 뿌리치지 못한 자식들이 음식을 받아먹고 좌절함으로써 이야기는 비극으로 갈무리되고, 어머니가 아니었더라면 이루어질 수도 있었던 이들의 미래의 가능성은 해소되지 않은 채로 남겨진다. 이러한 딜레마는 자식들이 어머니로부터 정서적으로 ‘독립’하지 못하게 하는, 그리하여 어머니가 제시하는 가족 역할에 대한 종속으로부터 벗어나지 못하게 하는 부채감의 정서와 결부되어 있다. 이 부채감의 정서는 어머니의 요구가 강제나 강요가 아닌 자신이 만든 음식을 먹어보라고 애원하는 일, 즉 희생과 헌신이라는 ‘어머니’ 역할의 전면화를 통해 이루어진다는 사실로부터 비롯된다. 자식들에게 어머니가 내미는 음식은 역할과 존재를 구분할 수 없는 ‘어머니’의 상징으로 다가와, 그들이 이 음식을 도저히 거절할 수 없는 정서적 압박으로 기능한다. 서사적으로 다른 선택지가 주어지지 않는다는 점에서 등장인물 누구도 이 ‘가족’의 굴레에서 자유로울 수 없다. ‘어머니의 음식’이라는 소재를 경유하여, 구전이야기 속 가족 관계를 ‘가족’이라는 ‘정상성’의 규범에 복무하기를 요구하는 폭력의 은유로 읽어낼 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article is an analysis of oral narratives that contain the motif of “mother’s cooking.” In the stories “The Trial of Strength between Brother and Sister” and “The Woodcutter and the Fairy,” the mother of the main character appears at a crucial moment and tells him/her to eat the food she has made. The main character is conflicted about whether to accept the mother’s cooking, but in the end cannot refuse the mother’s invitation, so they eat the food and end up in ruins. This tendency of narratives raises the need to interpret the narrative of the family in oral narratives as a symbolic narrative in which the concept of “family” is maintained and continued. The reason that children cannot refuse their mother’s cooking even though they foresee their own tragic ending is because of their sense of debt to their mother. The burden on their heart due to their mother’s sacrifice and devotion to them makes them unable to resist. This shows that this scene is not just about “food,” but a question about whether or not to conform to the norm of a “child” which their mother requires of them. The fact that the children in the narratives choose to die after eating their mother’s cooking shows that they have failed to become psychologically independent from their mother. In conclusion, the narratives can be analyzed as narratives of children who cannot escape the emotional control of their mother and have no choice but to return to the bondage of the “family.”
