부안 ‘개양할미’ 서사의 콘텐츠화 방안 -마고할미 계열 아동도서 검토를 중심으로

국문 초록

부안의 ‘개양할미’는 지형 형성에 관여한 거인 여신이라는 마고계통의 핵심적 정체성을 공유하면서도 악신(혹은 인간)으로 마모되는 비극적 결말에 수렴하지 않는 유일한 존재라 할 수 있다. 이 글은 한반도의 창세여신인 마고할미 콘텐츠의 향방을 모색하는 한 작업으로 개양할미에 잠재된 문화원형으로서의 서사적 가치를 조명한다. 이를 위해 특히 마고계 아동서의 출판 현황을 검토하여 마고신화의 현대적 전승 양상을 살핀 뒤, 개양할미를 활용한 옛이야기 그림책 및 창작동화 출간에 긴요하리라 판단되는 주요 화소의 활용 및 변용안을 제언한다. 먼저 마고계 아동서의 출판 현황을 종합하면, 마고신화는 제주의 설문대할망 위주로 전승되고 있으며 개양할미 등 타 지역의 마고계 할미들은 사실상 극심하게 소외된 양상이었다. 또한 개양할미를 소재로 한 아동서의 경우는 원형 서사에서 강조되어 온 수호신으로서의 면모가 많은 부분 희석된 아쉬움을 남겼다. 이에 본고는 이러한 마고신화 전승의 한계를 개양할미의 재발견을 통해 타파할 수 있으리라는 전제에서 개양할미 서사를 활용한 두 가지 방안 즉, 옛이야기 그림책으로의 차별화와 옛이야기 소재 창작동화로의 융합화 방안을 탐색했다. 그 결과 전자는 서해 변산반도 지역설화로서의 특색화 가능성, 후자는 마고신화의 입체적 다시쓰기를 통한 한국형 할미신 캐릭터 고안의 필요성을 역설하는 데로 각각 수렴되었다. 따라서 이상의 논의는 여신에 대한 인식 변화를 거치며 급기야 파괴적 존재로까지 굴절되어 선신과 악신의 경계를 넘나들게 된 마고할미의 다면성을 균형적·입체적으로 전승하기 위한 비평적 관점을 환기한다. 더불어 마고계 여신으로서 개양할미라는 서해 수호신격의 서사적 활용 가치를 시론적으로나마 검토해본 의의가 있겠다. 미진한 부분은 영등할미, 삼신할미 등등 마고할미와 연관성이 닿아 있는 다양한 할미신격을 더욱 확장적으로 함께 살펴가면서 향후 보완해야 할 것으로 생각한다. 더불어 중국의 마고 혹은 마조여신과 우리의 마고할미가 어떻게 같고 다른지 분별하는 문제도 후속 연구에서 보다 정치하게 다루고자 한다.

영문 초록

Buan's Gaeyang-Halmi shares a core identity with other Mago-related stories, where a giantess is involved in the formation of topography, but it is the only one that does not have a tragic conclusion. This study looked into Gaeyang-Halmi’s epic value as a potential cultural archetype. To do this, after reviewing the publication of Mago-related children's books, the author examined the patterns of its modern transmission and found effective ideas in Mago-related publications, verbal narratives, and creative fairy tales. First, an examination of Mago-related children’s books showed that the Mago myth is mainly passed down through Jeju's Seolmundae-Halmang, and other Mago-related myth in other regions, such as Gaeyang-Halmi, were essentially alienated. In addition, even in a storybook based on Gaeyang-Halmi, the aspect of her being a guardian goddess, which was emphasized in the original narrative was highly diluted. Accordingly, based on the premise that the limitations of the transmission of Mago mythology can be surmounted through the rediscovery of Gaeyang-Halmi, two methods using Gaeyang-Halmi's narrative were researched: differentiation of old stories in picture books and rewriting of creative fairy tales based on old stories. As a result, the former converged to the possibility of specialization as a regional narrative of the Byeon-san Peninsula in the West Sea, and the latter converged to the necessity of a Korean-style grandma character through a multi-dimensional rewrite of the Mago myth. The above discussion evokes a critical point of transmission of Mago, who eventually crossed the boundary between good and evil, through a change in perception of the goddess. In addition, the epic use and value of the West Sea guardian goddess, Gaeyang-Halmi was examined.
