조선후기 ‘서울 도깨비 이야기’의 특징과 그 의미

국문 초록

본고는 조선 후기에 서울 도성 안 도깨비 이야기가 다수 향유된 사실에 착목하여 이들 이야기의 경향성과 특징을 일별한 후, ‘조선후기 서울’이라는 시공간 속 사회·현실과 욕망·감정이 도깨비 이야기에 투영되는 방식과 그 미적 효과를 구명하고자 한다. 이를 통해 도깨비 이야기 안에 내재한 당대 서울에 거주하던 이들의 감정과 욕망이 다층적으로 조명될 것이며, 이야기의 역사적 변모 양상도 일정하게 파악될 것이다. 본디 문명과 떨어진 산속이나 들판, 행적이 드문 수풀, 그리고 인가(人家)의 주변부에 우거하는 것으로 상정되던 도깨비는 17세기 전란과 혼란한 조정 상황으로 인해 황폐화된 서울에 다수 출현하게 된다. 전란 이전에 찬란했던 공간들은 폐허가 되고 조정에는 권신들이 횡행하던바 서울은 마치 도깨비 소굴처럼 인식되었던 것이다. 그리하여 서울 한복판의 민가, 그리고 조정에는 기괴한 형상의 도깨비들이 등장하여 인간을 놀라게 하거나 그 생계를 어렵게 만든다. 그리하여 17세기의 서울 도깨비 이야기는 비극적이고 어두운 정조를 띤다. 그런데 18~19세기 도깨비는 황폐화된 도시가 아니라 불안과 욕망이 가득한 공간으로서의 서울로 찾아 든다. 도깨비는 서울 남산 자락 아래 묵사동(墨寺洞)·필동(筆洞) 등에 출몰하여 집 없이 흉가를 전전하는 빈한한 양반들의 불안을 고조시키는 한편 그 처지와 현실을 거울처럼 반영한다. 빈부의 이동이 활발히 일어나던 서울이라는 공간에 잘 적응하지 못하고 빈민층으로 전락한 몰락양반의 불안이, 그들의 주요 거주지인 남산 일대를 배경으로 도깨비라는 상상적 존재를 불러낸 것이다. 또한, 도깨비는 선혜청(宣惠廳)을 위시한 서울 관아 근처에 출몰하여 누군가에게는 엄청난 치부를 이루어주고 누군가는 가산을 탕진하게 하는데, 이들 이야기는 도깨비라는 초월적 존재를 등장시키는 배경으로 서울의 상업 공간이나 재정을 담당하는 관아 등을 설정한다. 그리하여 도깨비 이야기 속에 내재된 부에 대한 욕망이, 활발하게 물자가 이동했던 조선후기 서울의 분위기에서 산출된 것임을 노정한다. 또한, 이들 이야기는 치부의 과정을 그리 추상적이고 환상적으로 처리하지 않고 나름의 현실성을 담보하고 있어 다른 지역의 도깨비 이야기와 변별된다. 즉 도깨비라는 초월적 존재가 등장한다 하더라도 돈에 있어서는 다소 현실적인 입장을 취하는바 시정(市井)의 감수성을 담아내는 것이다. 이상의 논의를 통해, 조선후기 도깨비의 ‘상경’은 단순히 소재의 변천이나 배경의 이동변화에 그치는 것이 아니라 이 무렵 삶과 서사의 중심 장소가 향촌에서 도시로 옮겨진 결과임을 확인하였다. 곧, 서사의 새로운 향유 주체가 된 신흥 도시민의 환상과 불안은 당시 서울 공간의 다채로운 장소성과 조응해 나가며 상상의 소산인 도깨비를 소환한 것이다.

영문 초록

Drawing on the fact that various stories about ‘Dokkaebi’ in Seoul were widely enjoyed in the late Chosun Dynasty, this paper examines the tendencies and characteristics of these stories and seeks to identify how society, reality, desires, and emotions in the space-time of “Late Joseon Seoul” are projected onto the story of the Dokkaebi and its cultural significance. Through this, the feelings and desires of the people residing in Seoul during the time of Dokkaebi will be illuminated in a multi-layered way, and the historical transformation of the story will also be brought to attention. Dokkaebi, supposedly lived in the deep forest far away from civilization, appear in vast numbers in the middle of Seoul since 17th century as the city has been devastated and ravaged by wars and chaotic royal court. Due to the ruins of a city that had once been brilliant before the war and the corruption of the royal court, Seoul is perceived as a den of Dokkaebi. Thus, the bizarrely shaped Dokkaebi pops up in the middle of the city and starts to threaten the human residents, hindering their living. The story of the 17th-century Seoul Dokkaebi is clouded by a dark and tragic tone. However, the story of the 18th–19th century Seoul Dokkaebi is not woven against the backdrop of a devastated city, but is instead situated in a place full of desires. Dokkaebis are attracted to moneyed and wealthy places, and reveal the desires and emotions of newly appeared type of people in Seoul at the time. Ruined aristocrats who suffered from anxiety about homelessness, merchants who desired to make a lot of money by new business, lower class people who wanted to be free from the hard labor reflected their desires into the imaginary being, Dokkaebi. Moreover, at this time, the story of the Seoul Dokkaebi does not depict the way of accumulating wealth in an abstract and fantastic way, but rather guarantees its own reality. In other words, even if a transcendental being called a heck of a gimmick emerges, it is interesting to glimpse the sensitivity of the correction, which offers a somewhat realistic position regarding money. Thus, it is clarified that the story of the 18th–19th century Seoul Dokkaebi reflects the interest of emerging urban residents caused by socioeconomic changes at the time.
