남자유아교사의 “교사 되어가기”에 대한 질적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 유아교육기관에서 남자유아교사들이 담임교사가 되기 위한 과정에서 어떠한 경험을 하는지 살펴봄으로써 진정한 유아교사가 되어가는 과정의 의미를 알아보는 연구이다. 2011년 9월부터 2012년 8월까지 13개월 동안 2년 이상의 교사경력이 있는 4명의 남자유아교사에게 반구조화된 심층면담, E-mail, 전화 상담 등을 통해 자료를 수집하고, 수집된 내용은 자료를 전사하여 남자유아교사들에게 다시 보여주는 연구참여자 검증(member check)을 실시하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 남자유아교사는 봉사나 주일학교 등의 경험을 통해 아이들과 함께 하는 것에 즐거움과 보람을 느껴서 교사가 되려고 하였으나 부모님과 주변의 반대가 있었으며, 여학생들과의 학과생활에도 어려움이 있었다. 둘째, 남자유아교사는 준비가 되지 않은 유아교육기관 환경과 모델링 부재, 여교사의 관계에서의 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 셋째, 남자유아교사는 원장, 동료 여교사 그리고 학부모로부터 인정을 받기 위해 끊임없이 노력하고, 남자교사로서 뿌듯함과 보람을 느끼기도 하였다. 넷째, 남자유아교사를 바라보는 잘못된 선입견과 오해, 열악한 사회 경제력, 과도한 업무로 인해 직업적, 성적 정체성에 어려움을 겪기도 하는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study seeks to examine the experiences of male early childhood teachers in preschools. The subject were four male early childhood teachers. The four subjects participated in five to eight in-depth interviews with each session lasting 1 to 2 hours. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, male preschool teachers identified their strong affection for children as their main motivation for becoming a teacher. Despite the objections of their parents and those around them, their faith and confidence led them to apply to become preschool teachers. Secondly, the male preschool teachers experienced difficulties when adapting to their new jobs as preschool teachers. These difficulties included the lack of preschool environments for male teachers, the differences in physical rhythms between men and women, the lack of role models, and their awkward relationships with colleagues. Furthermore, through their own efforts and methods, the male teachers were able to gain the recognition and trust of parents to the extent that they were asked to serve as their second child s homeroom teacher. Lastly, factors such as prejudice and misunderstanding of male preschool teachers, limited socioeconomic power, and work overload, caused them to lose their identity and leave preschool education after a short period of time.
