국문 초록

본 연구는 한국사회 서열 중시 문화의 기원, 동인 및 교육적 유산을 살펴보고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 먼저 한국사회에서 서열 중시 문화의 형성, 진화, 강화에 영향을 끼친 요인들을 고찰하였다. 이와 관련, 한국어 존비어체계, 수도작 농경문화, 유교문화, 연령 중시 관행, 경쟁성향, 비교성향, 물질주의, 지대추구 유발 시험제도 등이 서로 어떻게 연관을 맺으며 서열 중시 문화에 영향을 끼치는지 논의하였다. 다음으로 한국사회에서 나타나는 서열 중시 문화의 실제를 주요 사례를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 한국사회의 서열 중시 문화가 낳은 주요 교육적 유산을 고찰하였다. 변별과 선발에 경도된 교육, 사교육의 번창, 공정성 중시 평가제도, 대학 서열체계의 강화, 토론문화의 위축, 명시적 과시와 차별의 풍토가 주된 논의의 대상이었다. 연구결과는 한국사회 서열 중시 문화의 버팀목이 되어온 한국어 존비어체계를 미래지향적으로 개혁하는 것이 한국교육의 해묵은 과제들을 해결하는 데 큰 도움이 될 수 있으리란 점을 보여주었다.

영문 초록

In this study I examine the origins, drivers, and educational legacies of the hierarchical culture in Korean society. To this end, first, the factors affecting the formation, evolution, and reinforcement of the hierarchical culture in Korean society were discussed. In this regard, I discussed how the Korean honorific-humble language system, rice-farming culture, Confucianism, practices of respecting elders, competitive tendencies, social comparison tendencies, materialism, and exam systems promoting rent-seeking behaviors relate to each other and affect the hierarchical culture in various ways. Next, I examined the realities of the hierarchical culture in Korean society. Finally, I delved into the main educational legacies of the hierarchical culture. The main topics of discussion were screening- and selection-oriented education, proliferation of private tutoring, evaluation system emphasizing fairness, strengthening of university ranking structure, suppression of discussion culture, and climate of blatant show-off and discrimination among students. The results of this study indicate that a future-oriented reform of the Korean honorific-humble language system could be instrumental in resolving Korea s chronic education problems because it has been yielding a profound influence on the overall life of Koreans, including the hierarchical culture.
