대학 영어졸업인증제 요건과 방식의 표준화 방안

국문 초록

본 논문은 각 대학이 재학생들의 영어실력을 키우기 위한 방법으로 시행하고 있는 영어졸업인증제의 현황을 살펴보고, 인증제를 시행하는 요건, 방식과 표준화 가능성을 살펴보고자 한다. 2000년대부터 영어졸업인증제를 실시해온 대학을 중심으로 1) 인증제의 시행방식, 2) 인증제의 표준화된 기준 및 요건, 3) 인증제의 표준화를 위한 방안 등을 살펴보았다. 조사한 대학들에게서 보이는 일반적인 특징은 우선 공인영어시험을 인증의 기본 수단으로 하고 있으며, 또한 대학 자체의 강좌를 단계적으로 이수하는 인증제도를 시행하는 대학도 일부 있다. 두 번째 특징으로 다양한 어학관련 공인시험을 허용하고 있는데, 이는 미국영어를 중심으로 하는 표준화 시험이 더 많이 포함되어 있고, 읽기 중심의 시험이 더 많다. 하지만, 최근에 말하기 중심의 시험이 추가되고 있는 것으로 나타난다. 세 번째 특징으로 대학 자체에서 개발한 평가를 주로 하는 경우는 거의 없고, 공인시험을 대체하는 특별시험도 거의 운영하지 않아서, 대내외에 표준화된 기준을 제공하려는 의도로 보인다. 실제로 하나의 표준화된 시험을 사용하기보다는 대학이나 학생들이 원하는 영어기능을 채택할 수 있도록 다양한 표준화된 시험과 대학별 혹은 학과별로 다른 기준을 허용하고 있다. 이러한 현상에서 영어졸업인증제를 하나의 표준화된 기준으로 통합하는것은 효율적이지 않지만, 공인시험과 같은 표준화된 기준들을 제공할 수 있어야 하며, 각 대학은 학생들의 영어실력을 강화하기 위해 영어인증 설정단계에 따라서 그 대학에 적합한 인증제를 시스템화하는 것이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the status of English proficiency requirements for graduation implemented by universities, and to examine the methods of implementing the certification systems, and the possibility of certification standardization. At universities that have implemented English certification systems for graduation since the 2000s, 1) the methods of implementing the certification, 2) the requirements and standards of the certification, and 3) possible ways to standardize the certification system were examined. Above all, the TOEFL and TOEIC English proficiency tests are the most common means of measuring English proficiency, and a few universities have implemented a certification system where students complete the university s own courses in stages. The second feature is that various language-related accredited tests are allowed. They include mostly standardized tests centered on American English and mostly reading-oriented tests. However, it appears that speaking-oriented tests have been added recently. The third feature is that universities rarely conduct assessments that they have developed themselves, and university-created special tests that replace accredited tests are rarely used, so most universities provide standardized results from generally accepted accredited tests for their English certification requirement. In fact, rather than using one standardized test and proficiency level, various standardized tests, even different foreign language tests, and proficiency levels are allowed for different colleges and departments so that universities or students can adopt the desired English function and proficiency level. Instead of a single standardized system, each university should systematize the optimal certification system using standardized tests by the proper steps to strengthen students English proficiency.
