국문 초록

본 연구는 연금술의 상징과 그 심리적 의미를 분석하였다. 연금술은 우주의 모든 것이 원물질에서 비롯된다고 가정한다. 원물질은 메르쿠리우스이다. 초기 연금술사에 따르면 불, 물, 공기, 흙의 네가지 요소는 원물질에 영향을 준다. 연금술 과정에는 개인의 변형을 나타내는 7가지 단계가 있다. 연금술은 심리학적으로 부분인격인 자아가 근원의 상태를 회복하려고 빛의 근원지를 찾아가는 것이다. 우리는 자신의 깊은 본성을 실현하는데 방해되는 성품을 파괴해야 한다. 이는 철학자의 돌이며 우리 삶의 소명은 금의 상징으로 표현된다. 연금술은 인간의 성장발달을 설명하고 인격의 변화에 영향을 주는 요소들을 파악하게 하고 자신의 본성, 메르쿠리우스를 발견하도록 도움을 주는 신비한 상징이다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the symbols of alchemy and its psychological meaning. Alchemy posits that all things in the universe originate with the material prima. The prima materia is Mercurius. According to the early alchemists, the four elements-fire, water, air, and earth—impressed’ on to the Prime Matter. There are seven general stages in the alchemical process, which correspond to seven stages of individual transformation. Alchemy is the psychologically partial ego that seeks the source of light in order to restore the state of the source. We must ‘break down’ aspects of our character that are in the way of the realization of our deeper, higher nature. This deeper, higher nature is the Philosopher’s Stone, and our ‘higher calling’ in life is represented by the symbol of gold. Alchemy is mysterious symbol that explains the growth and development of human beings, helps to identify factors that influence the change of personality, and helps to discover one’s prima materia, Mercurius.
