국문 초록

한국의 최근세 사회상황을 배경으로 성립한 원불교는 한국인의 정체성문제와 관련하여 다양한 교설을 전개하고 있다. 개조인 소태산은 법신불일원상(法身佛一圓相)을 종지로 하는 교체(敎體)의 연원을 불법(佛法)에 두면서도, 한국인을 제도해온 가르침을 유불도삼교로 파악한다. 그리고 이들의 특성을 살려 일원화해 나갈 때 세계의 모든 종교의 교의와도 만나는 큰 가르침이 될 것이라고 한다. 이는 다종교의 공존을 전제한 가르침이다. 소태산의 교설에 있어서 한국인의 정체성을 드러낸 교설은 특히 <강자약자진화상 요법>과 <금강산 법문>에서 찾을 수 있다. 여기서 그는 한국을 “고기가 변하여 용이 되는 시기에 놓여 있다”고 보고, 앞으로 세계 정신의 지도국, 인류 도덕의 부모국이 될 것으로 전망한다. 그것은 금강산의 주인으로서의 한국인이 법기(法器)를 갖추므로서 가능한 것이라고 본다. 진리적 종교의 신앙과 사실적 도덕의 훈련으로 과학과 도학을 병진하는 참 문명인을 길러낸다는 수행이론은 그 교육 프로그램인 셈이다.

영문 초록

Wonbuddhism which originated in the modern Korean situation absorbed a variety of teachings with respect to the issue of Korean identity. The founder of Wonbuddhism (Jungbin Baak, with a pseudonym of Sotaesan: 1891-1943) viewed Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism as the main trunk of Korean thoughts, even if he based a central point of his teachings on Buddhism. In addition, he maintained that we could find one way to the main theme of the world religions tenets, if we synthesized characteristics of the respective teachings. His teaching presupposed the coexistence of multi-religion.Among Sotaesan s teachings, the dharmas such as “the essential dharmas regarding how the strong and the weak may evolve” and “dharma of Keumgang Mountain” are the ones which revealed Korean s identity. In those teachings, he viewed that Korea was situated in “a changing period from a fish to a dragon” and predicted that Korea would become “a leader state of world mind” and “a parental state of mankind s ethics.” He thought that it was possible, if Korean as owner of Keumgang Mountain got “a vessel of Dharmas.” The programs for educating this identity are methods of practices which purport to raise the truly civilized humans with both capacities of religion and science by belief of truthful religion and moral training based on facts.
