국문 초록

통일교는 “욕망은 본래 인간의 창조성이었는데 인간의 타락으로 타락성을 갖게 되었다.”고 본다. 인류의 조상 아담과 해와의 타락 사건이 인간이 죄성을 갖게 된 동기가 되었고, 이 죄성이 근성으로 남아 있기 때문에 인간의 욕망이 선보다 악을 지향하게 된다. 따라서 구원의 보충적 기능을 갖는 종교교육에서 인간의 욕망을 다스리는 것을 종교교육의 한 과정으로 삼아야 한다. 통일교에서 이해하는 욕망의 특성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 욕망의 이중성이다. 욕망은 본심을 따라 작용하면 창조의 원동력이 되지만 사심을 따라 작용하면 파괴의 근원이 될 수 있는 것이다. 둘째, 욕망은 확장성을 갖는다. 욕망은 제어하지 않으면 나선형으로 계속 확장된다. 셋째, 욕망은 주관성을 갖는다. 욕망은 대상을 소유하고 지배하려는 속성을 갖는다. 이러한 욕망을 제어하는 것이 인간의 양심이다. 양심은 욕망을 항상 선한 방향으로 이끌어가려고 한다. 그러나 타락한 인간은 선의 절대기준을 모르기 때문에 양심은 자신이 선이라고 하는 기준대로 욕망을 이끌어 간다. 양심을 절대 선의 방향으로 이끌어 가는 것이 심정이다. 심정은 하나님의 창조성으로 대상을 사랑하고 기쁨을 돌리고자 하는 속성이 있다. 따라서 인간이 하나님과 심정 일체를 이루고 살면 욕망은 늘 본심대로 작용할 수 게 된다. 통일교에서 욕망을 다스리는 수행방법으로 (1) 위하는 삶의 실천 (2) 절제와 금욕생활 (3) 훈독의 생활화 등이 있다. 이러한 것들을 실천하게 하는 것이 종교교육의 과정이 된다. 명상, 묵상, 기도, 헌신과 봉사 등의 종교적 수행은 결국 인간의 욕망을 다스리기 위한 종교교육의 실천과정이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is an attempt to explicate “meaning of desire” and “control of desire” from the viewpoint of Unification Church. Unification Church explicates that desire is originally a creative nature but it became a fallen nature by the fall of the first ancestors. In other words, the originally creative desire was tainted with vice through the fallen affairs of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and thereafter the desire has pointed toward viciousness rather than goodness. Therefore the religious education which is to supplement salvation should focus on how to discipline people for their vicious desire. Unification Church explicates the desire as follows, First, the desire has twofold meanings. The desire can be creative power or destructive force depending on the direction of mind. Second, the desire has expansibility: if we do not control the desire, it is expanded continually with spiral climb. Third, the desire has ruling character: it tends to posses and rule the objects. Conscience has function to control the desire. The conscience tries to lead the desire toward goodness. But the fallen human beings have lost the absolute standard of goodness, and in the absence of the absolute standard of goodness, the conscience gets to lead the desire in the direction of what they believe to be good. Shimjung leads conscience in the direction of the original mind, for Shimjung is God s creative nature which loves objects with the heart of God, and pays the tribute of joy to God. So when we live by God Shimjung, the desire gets to operate according to the original mind. Unification Church recommends three ways to control the desire; (1) altruistic life, (2) moderate and ascetic life, and (3) scripture reading. These are the subjects of the religious education and the processes of the ascetic practice in Unification Church. Ascetic practices like meditation, contemplation, prayer, devotion and service to the public can all be considered to ways of practicing religious teachings.
