영성의 정의와 자기 배려 교육의 가능성

국문 초록

영성의 정의에 관하여 혼란이 팽배한 원인은 영성신학과 영성학을 구별하지 않은데 기인한다. 영성학(spirituality)은 18세기 등장한 영성신학(spiritual theology)과 매우 다른 최근의 문화동향이다. 이것을 과거의 시각으로 해석하거나 이해하려는데 개념혼란의 원인이 있다. 현대영성에 대하여 방대하고 정치한 이론을 전개했던 미셸 푸코는 영성을 고대 그리스, 제정로마시대, 초대 기독교의 전통에서 수행되었던 자기 배려에서 찾는다. 자기 배려는 주체가 자기 자신을 발화의 주체로 삼아 스스로 창조해가는 미학 혹은 예술적 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 한편 현대영성을 교육에 적용하기 위하여 다양한 모델이 실험되고 있다. 이글은 현재까지 진행되고 있는 세 가지 유형의 영성교육에 관한 모색들을 살펴보고 새로운 모델의 영성교육의 가능성을 타진한다. 적어도 영성교육은 진리의 신체화 과정을 반드시 포함하여야 한다. 또한 지식교육에서조차 신체 및 정신적 수행이 필수적이다. 이것을 성리학의 거경궁리와 세네카의 굽어보는 시선을 비교함으로써 그 가능성을 타진해보았다.

영문 초록

The turmoil regarding the definition of spirituality stems from the confusion between spiritual theology and spirituality. The spiritual theology has come from scholastic background in 18th century, whereas spirituality has been based upon the postmodern culture in the milieu of western Europe. Accordingly, spirituality has to be separated from spiritual theology. Michel Foucault, developed extensive and sophisticated theory on spirituality, seeks for the nature of spirituality in the tradition of ancient Greek philosophy, Greco-Roman stoicism, and early Christian patrology. For Foucault, spirituality is similar to the exercise of epimuleia heautou or philosophy from the ancient perspective. Thus, spirituality can be called as an aesthetics of self or an art of existence. For many years, educators and theologians engaged in the spiritual education and consequently several types of perspective were raised. This paper demonstrates that today spiritual education must embrace the curriculum of physical or bodily exercise as well as spiritual meditation.
