지명 전설에 나타난 ‘인간-자연’의 관계와 공간 구성의 의미

국문 초록

지명 전설은 자연물의 생김새와 지리적 특성, 마을과 산천의 이름이 생겨난 유래 등 증거물의 내력을 밝혀 주는 이야기이다. 지명 전설로 전해오는 증거물이 놓인 자연 공간은 자연이 놓인 공간 그 자체로 존재하기보다 전승 집단의 인지적 해석 과정을 통해 의미를 갖는다. 본고는 임석재 전집에 수록된 전라북도 지역의 지명 전설을 중심으로 수용자의 정신 공간을 인간-자연의 관계 속에서 살펴보았다. 전설의 서사 세계와 현실 세계를 매개하는 전설의 증거물이 수용자의 인식에 새로운 공간을 구성한다는 점에 착안하여 지명 전설의 공간 구성을 새롭게 읽어보려는 시도라 하겠다. 그리하여 지명 전설 속 인간과 자연의 모습은 경험 세계의 논리에 비추어 ‘인간: 비인간’, ‘자연: 비자연’ 이라는 두 가지 양상으로 구분 짓고, 이에 따라 네 개의 정신 공간 유형을 살펴보았다. 먼저 ‘인간-자연’의 유형 전설은 경험 세계에 존재 가능한 인간과 자연이 연대의 공간을 이룬다. 여기서의 자연은 새 집터가 생겨난 배경이 되거나, 마을의 풍습을 마련하는 등 인간을 변화시키는 자연에 해당한다. 두 번째 ‘비인간-비자연’의 유형은 자연의 외형에 변화를 가하는 이야기로 인간은 초인적인 힘을 지닌 자로써 자연 앞에서 군림한다. 그러한 증거물이 놓인 공간은 전설의 기이성과 함께 신성 공간을 형성한다. 세 번째로 ‘인간-비자연’의 유형은 자연의 신이함으로 인간 문제를 해결해 주는 이야기로써 치유 공간을 다룬다. 마지막으로 ‘비인간-자연’의 유형은 인간의 탐욕과 이기심, 폭력에 의해 자연의 성질이 변화된 이야기이다. 이러한 증거물은 전설의 교훈성과 함께 수용자의 정신 공간에 교화적 공간을 구성한다. 지명 전설에서 자연이 존재하는 방식은 순수하게 자연의 상태로 남아있기 보다는 인간의 사고와 행위에 의해 모습과 성질을 갖추게 된다. 마찬가지로 인간이 살아가는 생활 터전도 자연의 힘에 의한 지배를 받음으로써 공간의 의미를 개념화한다. 지명 전설의 공간을 전승자의 인지 해석의 일환으로써 살핀 본고의 논의는 증거물이 남아 있는 공간에 새로운 의미를 보탠다는 데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The legend of the name reveals the origin of the evidence, including the appearance and geographical characteristics of natural objects, and the origin of the names of villages and mountain streams. The natural space where evidence is placed is meaningful through the cognitive interpretation process of the Story Acceptor rather than the space where nature is placed itself. This Study Based on the legend of the names in Jeollabuk-do, which was included in Lim Seok-jae s collection, the mental space of the inmates was examined in the relationship between humans and nature. The images of human and nature in the legend of nomination are divided into two aspects: Man: Nonhuman and Nature: Nonnature. it is according to the logic of the experience world. Accordingly, four mental space types were examined. First of all, the type of human-nature forms a space for solidarity between humans and nature, which can exist in the experience world. The second type of non-human-non-natural is the story of changing the appearance of nature. human reigns before nature as a man of transcendent power. Thirdly, the type of human-non-natural is a story that solves human problems with the divine nature of nature. This deals with the healing space. The last type of non-human-natural is a story in which the nature of nature has been changed by human greed, selfishness, and violence. These evidences constitute an edifying space in the mental space of the Story Acceptor, along with the moral nature of the legend. In the legend of geographical names, the way nature exists is shaped and characterized by human thought and behavior. Similarly, human s living foundation conceptualize the meaning of space by being governed by natural forces.
