축성전설 주인공의 변주 양상 연구

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 남해군 ‘대국산성’ 전설을 통해 특정 지역의 전승에서 축성전설의 주인공이 변주되는 양상을 살펴보았다. ｢오누이 힘내기｣와 유사하게 ‘성쌓기-옷짓기’ 대결이 나타나면서도 그 대결이 ‘명목상’에 그치는 점에 착안하였다. 대결의 성격이 변화한 까닭을 축성 주체의 성격에서 찾고자 하였는데, ｢오누이 힘내기｣의 성쌓기형 에서 축성 주체는 누이이며 패자이지만 대국산성 전설에서 축성 주체는 남성인 천장군이며 승자이다. ｢오누이 힘내기｣의 ‘옷짓기형’에서 남동생이 성을 쌓았다는 경우가 있기에 ｢오누이 힘내기｣의 남성 인물 중심 전승 경향이 영향을 미쳤다고 볼 수도 있으나, ｢오누이 힘내기｣의 주인공 남매가 모두 해당 지역 출신의 내부인인 데 반해 대국산성 전설의 주인공 천장군에게는 외부인이라는 속성이 부여된다. 이에 ‘성쌓기-옷짓기’ 등 내부적 대결이 아니라 축성 주체와 외부의 대결이 주요 갈등 구도를 형성함에 주목하였다. ‘성쌓기-옷짓기’의 대결보다 국가와 축성 능력자 주인공의 대립이 전승에서 흥미를 끄는 요소가 된다. 그러나 천장군 같은 이의 능력은 ‘아기장수’형 인물의 능력과 그 ‘위험성’을 공유할 수밖에 없다. 이 과정에서 ‘천장군’과 같은 인물이 지니는 외부성과 타자성, ‘한계’가 축성 주체의 성격을 구성하는 데 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있을 것이라 보았다. 천장군은 외부 권력에 대해서도, 해당 지역에 대해서도 외부인이자 타자이다. 그는 도술을 부려 성을 쌓을 정도의 능력자이나, 그 능력은 내부와 외부로부터 모두 경계된다. 그러나 이러한 ‘한계’가 그를 계속 축성의 주인공으로 수용하는 요인이 된다고 보았다. 이에 대국산성 전설의 주인공이, 「오누이 힘내기」의 남매 주인공이 지닌 타자성을 공유하면서도 천장군의 외부성을 통해 축성 주체의 타자성을 변주하고 있다고 보았다. 아울러 축성 주체가 중앙․외부 권력에 대해 갖는 타자성을 고려한다면, 대립자의 위상 약화 역시 축성 주체의 ‘영웅성’보다 주변 조력자를 포용하지 못한 고립성과 한계를 드러내는 요소일 수 있다. 이 역시 ‘옷짓기형’ ｢오누이 힘내기｣와의 공통점이나, ‘대국산성’ 전설에서는 주인공의 외부성이 이 한계를 한층 부각하게 된다.

영문 초록

This paper studied the variations in the protagonist of local transmission of the fortress-building legend, Daeguksanseong (Daeguk-mountain fortress) of Namhae, Gyeongsangnam-do. Similar to the Trial of Strength between Brother and Sister Tale(Trial for short), this legend also illustrates the confrontation between building and clothing. While the fortress builder in Trial was the defeated and a female, the builder in this legend is the winner, who is a male general. It can be simply argued that the male-centeredness of the transmission in Trial influenced this legend. However, the siblings in Trial are regional insiders, whereas the fortress builder of this legend, whose name is “Cheon janggun” or “General Cheon”, is a regional outsider. Rather than a battle for building and clothing, the confrontation between the state and the protagonist, who is the builder, becomes an interesting factor in the narration of the legend. However, the power that comes with being a general carries great risk, as seen in the tale such as Baby Warrior. In this context, the general’s limitations, externality, and otherness play important roles in constructing his character. The general is an outsider and the other to both—the external authority and native region. He performs magic to build the fortress, but both the inside and outside are wary of his competence. However, this limitation can be a factor drawing him to be taken as the protagonist builder of the legend. Consequently, the protagonist of this legend reflects externality and otherness, as depicted in Trial. Additionally, when the general’s female counterparts—maids-in-law, court ladies, and wives—do not play the role of his substantial opponents, his otherness to the external (central) state power could lead to isolation rather than heroism. The general’s externality is more focused in this legend compared with Trial.
