국문 초록

본 연구에서는 말이 인간과 함께하면서 인간이 그들에게 동일시하여 부여했던 상징적인 의미들을 파악해보고자 한다. 상징이란 인간의 무의식에 내제된 원형(Archetype)들의 심상적인 표현들로 명백하고 직접적인 의미 그 이상으로 결코 정확하게 정의되거나 남김없이 설명될 수 없는 보다 넓은 ‘무의식적’인 측면이다. 연구자는 말의 상징적인 의미들을 말의 생물학적인 측면에서 나타나는 일반적인 상징과 신화, 전설, 유물, 그림, 건축물, 무덤 양식, 민속학적 관점 속에 나타나는 말의 상징적인 의미들을 파악하고자 한다. 말은 우리나라 삼국시대 건국 신화에서 국조 탄생을 알리는 영물로 또한 우리나라, 중국, 일본 등에서 말에게 제사를 지내 신적인 존재로의 신성성을 상징하며, 고대 유물 속에 매장된 물품이나 무덤에 왕과 같이 순장되었던 말에서 죽은 영혼을 천상으로 인도하는 매개자의 역할, 양의 속성이 강한 말의 특징으로 말 모양의 장식 등을 몸에 지님으로 악귀나 병마를 쫓고자 했던 벽사적 의미, 서양에서 말을 태양과 연관 지어 왕과 말의 희생제의를 통한 부활의 의미로, 말의 생태학적으로 빠르고 신속한 측면에서 교통·운송·통신 기관과 놀이문화와 마상재 등에서 나타난 역동적인 힘의 상징으로 함축해 볼 수 있다. 말이 인간과 오랜 역사를 함께 동고동락하면서 말이 인간에게 자기 존재의 의미를 부여해준 것이며 앞으로 말의 상징적인 의미에 관한 연구는 계속되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to investigate the symbolic meanings that humans have given to horses through the identification of themselves with these animals that have lived with them for a long time. Symbols are imaginary expressions of archetypes in the human unconscious and represent something beyond what is explicitly and directly expressed and wider aspects of unconsciousness that can never be precisely defined or fully explained. This study examines the general symbolic meanings of horses based on their ecological characteristics and those represented in myths, legends, artifacts, paintings, buildings, tomb styles, and folklore. In the founding myths of ancient Korean kingdoms, horses are depicted as mystical animals that herald the birth of new rulers. Also, the rites performed related to horses in East Asian countries including Korea, China and Japan, suggest that horses were regarded as a symbol of sanctity. Many horse-shaped ancient artifacts and horse remains excavated in royal tombs show that horses were considered messengers of the next world that guide the souls of the dead to heaven. The custom of carrying objects in the shape of horse, which were deemed to have strong yang energy, on the body in order to drive away evil spirits and diseases reflects the symbolic meaning of exorcism that horses had. In the West, horses were associated with the sun and given the symbolic meaning of revival through sacrificial rites for kings. In addition, having swiftness and agility, which are their distinct ecological characteristics, horses also symbolize dynamic strength, especially in many traffic, transportation, and communication systems, various games, and horseback martial arts. These symbolic meanings have revealed the various aspects of horses, which have lived with humans for a very long time. It is hoped that the study on the symbolism on horses will be continued in the future.
