국문 초록

생명정치를 철학적으로 논하려고 하면 흔히 푸코를 떠올린다. 그러나 생명정치가 정립된 이래로 그 의미와 역할은 지속적으로 달라져왔다. 이때 변화의 범위는, 개인이 생명 과정에 개입할 여지와 생명 정책에 대한 개인적 의결권이 확대되는 것과 연동된다. 21세기에 들어서면 생명공학과 생명의학의 수준이 고도화하면서 생명정치는 생명자본으로 이행하고 생명의 상품화를 추동하는데, 개인들은 그런생명 상품을 소비하면서 미래지향적 라이프스타일을 설계하는 생명공학적 주체 내지 예방의학적 주체성을 형성하게 된다. 이렇게 해서 생명자본화한 주체가 발휘하는 욕망 때문에 삶의 터전이 박탈되거나 소외당하는 새로운 빈곤층이 생겨난다. 이 글은 생명정치의 형성에서부터 생명자본에 이르기까지 그 의미와 역할이 달라지는 과정을 추적하면서 생명정치의 명암을 고찰하는데 목표를 둔다. 생명정치는 개인의 자율성과 선택권을 강화하지만 동시에 빈곤층을 양산하는 구조에도 편승하기 때문에, 이 글은 생명정치의 파장을 양가적으로 조명하면서 취약 지대를 보편적으로 드러내고 여성의 삶에도 공히 적용되는 측면을 탐구한다.

영문 초록

When referring to biopolitics in a philosophical context, people generally think of Foucault. However, since the establishment of biopolitics, its meaning and role have changed continuously. The level of biotechnology and biomedicine has gradually advanced, and as a result, individuals have the possibility to intervene in the life process and to exercise a wide range of voting rights. In the 21st century, biopolitics is transformed and expanded in the form of biocapiltal. In the structure of biopolitics, individual now forms a biotech subject or a preventive healthcare subject that designs a future-oriented lifestyle consuming life products. The new subject creates a new group of poverty and causes alienation of humans in the midst of trying to satisfy the desires induced by biocapital. This thesis examines the process of formation and change of biopolitics, and organizes the positive and negative effects of biopolitics while tracking the change in meaning that extend to biocapital. Biopolitics reinforces individual choice over life processes, regardless of the gap between the rich and the poor. At the same time, as poverty groups are newly formed, it is necessary to reveal the weak points by analyzing the ambivalent aspect of biopolitics. This study shows that the ambivalence is applicable to women.
