좋은 삶의 영위를 위한 하나의 형식적 조건으로서의 비지배 자유

국문 초록

비지배 자유는 좋은 삶의 특정한 관념을 내세우지 않는다는 점에서 현대사회의 다원주의와 양립할 수 있으면서도, 그동안 주류를 이루어온 비간섭 자유 중심의 자유주의에 대한 불만을 해소할 수 있는 제3의 길로서의 공화주의의 핵심을이루는 이상이다. 하지만 현재 신로마 공화주의에 대한 논의는 다양한 지배-예속관계들을 분석하고 해결책을 제시하는 생산적인 방향으로 나아가지고 못하고, 여전히 비지배 자유의 유효성에 대한 개념적 논쟁의 단계에 머물러 있다. 본 논문은 공화주의에 대한 주요 비판을 지배의 편재화 비판과 자유의 도덕화 비판의 두 가지로 파악하고, 이를 극복하기 위해 비지배 자유 개념을 다음의 두 가지 점에서 재정식화한다. 첫째, 공화주의자들이 원자적 행위자들 간의 이항적(dyadic) 관계라는 분석적 행위 이론의 모델에 따라 지배를 파악하면서 추상한 ‘사회적인 것(the social)’ 을 다시 비지배 자유 개념과 연관시키는 것이다. 둘째, 비지배 자유가 정의(justice) 와 좋은 삶(good life)라는 정치철학의 두 가지 좌표축과 관련하여 어떠한 위치에있는지를 분명하게 하는 것이다. 본 논문은 비지배 자유를 민주주의 사회에서 시민들이 좋은 삶을 영위하기 위한 하나의 형식적 조건으로서 이해하는 것이 가장 적절하다고 본다.

영문 초록

Freedom as non-domination is the core ideal of neo-Roman republicanism, which is compatible with the pluralism of modern democratic society in that it does not put forward a particular conception of good life, and which is expected to resolve the discontents of mainstream liberalism. However, republicanism seems to have failed to advance to a productive level in which various relationships of domination-servitude are properly analyzed and feasible solutions are formulated. Current debates on this topic are stuck at a stage of conceptual debate on the validity of freedom as non-domination. This paper identifies the main criticisms of republican freedom as twofold: the ubiquity of domination and the moralization of freedom, and aims to reformulate freedom as non-domination freedom in the following two respects: First, it will reintroduce the aspect of ‘the social’, which republican theorists abstracted, conceptualizing domination according to the model of analytical behavior theory, to freedom as non-domination. Second, it clarifies how republican freedom related to the two fundamental concepts of political philosophy: justice and good life. This paper argues that it is most appropriate to conceptualize republican freedom as a formal condition for citizens to lead a good life in a democratic society.
