국문 초록

타산성에 관한 한 쟁점은 과거 복지와 미래 복지의 중요성이다. 이 쟁점에 관한 미래 편향성 논제에 따르면 미래의 복지를 과거의 복지보다 중요시하는태도는 허용될 수 있다. 예를 들어 이미 고통을 받은 상황과 곧 고통을 받을 상황과 중, 설령 전자가 후자보다 고통스럽다고 하더라도, 전자를 선호하는 태도는 타산성의 관점에서 적절하다. 본 논문은 미래 편향성 논제에 대한 두 대표적 반론을다룬다. 그린과 설리반에 따르면 미래 편향적 태도는 아무 이유 없이 이득의 획득시점을 연기하도록 한다는 점에서 부적절하다. 더하여 도거티에 따르면 행위 주체의 미래 편향적 태도는 합리적 판단을 후회토록 하기에 문제가 있다. 필자는 이 두반론을 구성하는 전제들을 분석하고 이 전제들이 타당하지 않다는 점을 들어 그린- 설리반 논증과 도거티 논증이 미래 편향성 논제를 비판하는 데 실패한다는 사실을 보인다.

영문 초록

An issue of prudence is whether an agent should consider her past welfare as important as her future welfare. According to the future partiality thesis, in the domain of prudence, it is permissible that an agent considers her future welfare more important than her past welfare. To put this another way, it is prudentially permissible that an agent prefers the scenario where she already experienced strong pain to the scenario where she will soon have mild suffering. In this paper, I introduce two arguments against the future partiality thesis. According to Greene and Sullivan, an agent’s future partiality is not permissible because for no good reason this partial attitude makes an agent postpone the timing to receive advantages. Furthermore, Dougherty contends that future partiality is not justifiable because a future-biased agent could regret her previous decision even in the case where the previous decision is prudentially rational. I argue that these two arguments fail in defeating the future partiality thesis.
