국문 초록

음악연주에서 리듬 상의 밀고 당김은 실제 음악을 살아있게, 생동감 있게 만들어주는 요소이다. 서양예술음악에서는 이를 ‘표현적 타이밍’이라고 부른다. 그런데 지금까지의 연구결과들을 살펴보면, 표현적 타이밍을 정확히 규정하기가 쉽지 않고 이것을 사람들이 어떻게 지각하며 연주하는지에 대해서도 불분명한 것들이 있음을 알 수 있다. 이 글은 이 의문점들을 재즈와 대중음악에서의 유사한 현상인 ‘그루브’연구로부터 시사점을 찾아 표현적 타이밍 연구의 방향을 제시해보고자 함에 있다. 이 글에서 제기하는 첫 번째 의문점은 음악적 시간을 구조와 과정으로 분리해서 보는 이분법적 시각에 대해서이다. 그러나 그루브 연구자 크위프테(Kvifte, 2004)의 주장처럼, 우리의 음악적 시간에 대한 지각은 구조/표현, 문법/과정, 디지털/아날로그로 분리하여 일어날 수가 없다. 이것은 2개의 대립적 현실이 아니라 관점에 따른 경험의 질의 차이로 이해해야 한다. 두 번째 의문점은 리듬의 범주가 왜 간단한 정수비로 분절되지 않는가, 왜 템포에 따른 동일 비율관계를 유지하기가 어려운가 라는 점이다. 이는 리듬범주의 분절과 표현적 타이밍의 지속이 신체동작의 행위와 직접적인 연관관계를 맺고 있기 때문이라고 본다. 그루브 연구자인 피치(Fitch, 2019)가 그루브를 몸의 움직임과 연관시켰듯이, 표현적 타이밍의 대표적인 사례인 ‘프레이징 아칭’ 현상도 몸의 해부학적 자세인 정지동작에서부터의 이동과 귀환의 움직임을 상상하면서 느끼는 뉘앙스로 설명 될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

In musical performance, the nuance like as “laid-back”, or “hushed” is a key element that makes the music alive and lively. In Western art music, this is called expressive timing . There are not a few studies so far on how people perceive it, and why this perception gives people a special “feel”. Nevertheless, some questions remain. The first question raised in this article is whether it is appropriate to view the perception of musical time in a dichotomy of structure/expression, grammar/process, and digital/analog. It is argued that this should be understood as the quality of experience based on perspective, not as two opposing realities. The second question is how the categories of rhythm are segmented, why they are not segmented with a simple integer ratio, and why it is difficult to maintain the same ratio relationship between tone durations in a rhythmic group according to the tempo? This seems to be due to the fact that the segmentation and duration of the rhythm category and expressive timing are directly related to the behavior of the body movement. Body movements such as a gait are divided into periodic movements in which the feet touch the ground and continuous movements in which the feet are lifted and moved to the next position. It is argued that the majority of the phenomena we understand as expressive timing can be viewed as being related to the imitation of continuous motion.
