유덕함과 옳은 행위

국문 초록

본 논문이 성취하고자 하는 목표는 옳은 행위에 관한 애나스의 견해를 비판적으로 고찰하여 그 견해가 가진 문제점을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위한 하부 목표는 다음의 세 가지이다. 첫째, 옳은 행위에 관한 덕윤리 내의 몇 가지 견해를 요약적으로 제시한다. 둘째, 허스트하우스의 도식을 비판하며 제시되는 애나스의 대안적인 견해를 설명한다. 셋째, 애나스의 견해가 가진 문제점을 제시한다. 덕윤리학자들은 옳은 행위에 대한 몇 가지의 견해를 제시한다. ‘자격 있는 행위자(qualified agent) 설명’, ‘행위자 기반(agent-based) 설명’, 그리고 ‘목표 중심(target-centered) 설명’ 등이 대표적인 견해들이다. 애나스(Julia Annas)는 이 중에서 ‘자격 있는 행위자 설명’을 비판적으로 검토하며 대안적인 견해인 ‘학습자-전문가 발전(learner-expert development) 설명’을 제시한다. 학습자는 덕을 배워가며 발전해 가는 사람이다. 그는 자신보다 더 유덕한 선생이나 롤 모델을 찾아 본받으며 점점 더유덕해져 간다. 학습자는 선생이나 롤 모델의 추천을 받아 옳은 행동을 한다. 학습자는 아직 완전하지 않기 때문에 때로는 실수할 수 있는 반면에 전문가는 완전히유덕한 상태에서 행동하기 때문에 그런 실수를 하지 않는다. 논자는 이런 애나스의견해가 가진 문제점을 제시한다. 첫째, 애나스가 중요한 요소로 제시했던 진정성(authenticity) 조건을 애나스의 견해가 충족시키지 못한다고 주장한다. 둘째, 어떻게유덕한 사람을 확인할 수 있는가에 관한 문제와 이상적인 유덕함의 모호함 문제에대한 애나스의 견해도 문제점을 지닌다고 주장한다. 애나스가 제시한 대안이 허스트하우스의 도식이 제안하는 견해와 충분히 차별되지 않기 때문에, 둘 다 옳다고해야 하거나 둘 다 동일한 문제점을 가진다고 주장할 것이다.

영문 초록

The aim of this article is to argue that Annas’s view of right action has some problems. In order to achieve this aim, I pursue three subgoals: first, I explain four views of right action in virtue ethics. Second, I explain Annas view of right action which is suggested as an alternative view after critically examining Hursthouse’s view of right action. Third, I argue that Annas’s view of right action faces some problems. It is a serious burden to ethicists who support virtue ethics to face the criticism that virtues ethics does not provide us with effective guidance about what to do when we should make a moral decision. Responding to the criticism, virtue ethicists offer some views of right action. The main views are as follows: a qualified agent account, an agent-based account, and a target-centered account. Critically examining the qualified agent account, Annas suggests an alternative view which I call ‘a learner-expert development account.’ Learners are persons who try to be virtuous and make progress in terms of being virtuous. She finds teachers or role models who can guide her about being virtuous. In this process of being more virtuous, she should reflect on the virtues, values or principles. She can overcome and be better than her teachers or role models via her critical evaluation and reflection. On the other hand, an expert is a fully virtuous person who has good inner attitudes, a full understanding of the factors that are relevant to being virtuous, and the ability of making good judgements about being virtuous. Learners can make a mistake about being virtuous, whereas experts do not since they are fully virtuous. I argue that the account of learner-expert development faces some problems. First, I argue that the account does not satisfy the condition of authenticity that, Annas claims, is one of the requirements for a good theory of right action. Second, Annas’s view of how to identify a virtuous person and the vagueness of being ideally virtuous is problematic. I argue for the following: since Annas’s claims are not substantially different from the ones of Hursthouse, both the view of Hursthouse and the one of Annas are right or both of them face the same problem.
