국문 초록

이 논문은 후기 허스트의 ‘사회적 실제(social practice)에의 입문’이라는 아이디어를 교육의 목적과 교과의 정당화 논의의 맥락에서 검토하는 데 목적이 있다. 이 논문에서는 허스트의 전기와 후기 사고는 강조점의 차이에도 불구하고 인간성이 충분히 완성된 상태를 일상적 사회활동 안에서 찾는 ‘내재적 관점’을 유지하고 있다는 점에서 연속성을 보여주고 있다고 보았다. 전기의 논의가 사회적 실제의 추상의 결과로서의 지식의 형식을 주목하였다면 후기 논의는 추상 이전의 상태로서의 사회적 실제를 주목하고 있다고 해석할 수 있다. 이러한 해석을 바탕으로, 이론과 실제의 관계에 대한 후기 허스트 논의의 불명료성 및 가능한 대안적 접근들을 논의하고, 사회적 실제로의 입문 과정을 비트겐슈타인의 삶의 형식의 공유 과정으로 해석할 수 있음을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to review Hirst’s later idea of justification of education as an initiation into ‘social practices’. I argue that there is more continuities than differences between his early and later arguments on education, in that they both represent ‘immanent’ view on the nature of the fulfilled human existence: the view that looks for the fulfilled existence “within the everyday social practices of ordinary men and women”. We may say that whereas he puts more emphasis on the results of ‘intellectual abstraction’ during his early stage, he now pays more attention to the social practices themselves as the original sources of the abstraction. However, he is ambiguous on the relationship between the theory and the practice in that he wants to maintain a sharp distinction between the two. Also, his explanation on the processes of the initiation into social practices could run the risks of atomic individualism that he rejects. I suggest that the processes could be understood as processes of sharing, what Wittgenstein referred to as, ’form of life’.
