국문 초록

이 글은 삼강령 팔조목에 대한 분석을 통하여 「大學」에서 말하고자 하는 교육과 정치의 관련을 밝히는 데에 목적이 있다. 그리하여 이 글에서는 세 가지 강령과 여덟 가지의 조목사이의 계열적 관련을 어떻게 해석할 것인가 하는 것이 중요한 문제로 취급되며 그 관련방식에 관하여 중점적으로 고찰하였다. 또한 격물치지가 8조목 가운데에서 차지하는 특별한 위치가 무엇인가도 함께 해명함으로써 교과를 가르치고 배우는 일을 떠나서는 평천하라는 정치적 이상을 실현시킬 수 없다는 점을 드러내었다. 즉, 정치는 교육의 도움을 받지 않고는 이상사회를 실현할 수 없다는 점을 분명히 하였다. 이 글에서는 격물치지와 6조목 사이의 관련을 고찰함으로써 격물치지는 평천하라는 이상사회의 사실적 출발점일 뿐만 아니라 논리적 조건임을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to reinterpret the text of the Great Learning in the view of the logical connection of Education and Politics. Three doctrine(三綱領) and eight categories(八條目) are the important concept that occupies an important position in Chu Hsi’s philosophical system and the core concept that realize the Neo-Confucianism in the aspect of methodology. That’s why Chu Hsi has affection for The Great Learning. According to this study, ‘eight categories’ cannot be achieved in order, instead, the result of one activity, investigation of li, ko-wu chih-chih is represented in many way. Among all Neo-Confucian philosophers, Chu His is the only philosopher who alone emphasized the importance of book-learning in order to attain the li. The other clauses in eight categories’ except of ‘ko-wu chih-chih’ are the behavioral expressions of ‘study of li’ in many situations. In this study, the investigation of things’ (ko-wu) was interpreted as the common basis of three sections: education, politics and morals and also on this ground, it is identified that investigation of knowledge implies morals and the external manifestation of investigation of knowledge is politics.
