국문 초록

인간은 육체를 가지고 한정된 시간을 살아가는 존재이며, 인내는 이러한 근본적 한계 속에서 살아가는 인간이 ‘인간으로서’ 살아가는 데에 요구되는 덕이다. 인내를 단순히 세속적 이익과 성공을 위한 수단으로 간주하는 관점은 인내가 인격함양의 조건이면서 동시에 그 함양의 결과로 나타나게 되는 인격의 특징으로서 인간 존재의 깊은 차원에 닿아있다는 인식과는 양립 불가능하다. 키에르케고르가 보기에, 인내는 시간적 과정으로부터 영원한 결과가 나타나기를 기다리면서 언제 끝날지 모르는 그 기대와 노력을 지속할 수 있게 해 주는 근본적인 덕이다. 인간은 인내에 의하여 피조물에 대한 창조주의 인내에 참여하며, 그의 자아가 ‘그것을 만들어 낸 힘 속에 투명하게 안착하는 것’을 기대할 수 있다. 이 점에서 인내는 교육의 목적으로 간주될 만하며, 인내에 관한 담화는 교육의 실천으로서의 의미를 가진다고 말할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In our contemporary society, patience tends to be regarded as a means to satisfying one s earthly desires, not as a fundamental virtue involved in moral cultivation or self-realization. This tendency makes it difficult for us to recognize what role patience take in human becoming and development. We need to understand that patience must be rooted in the deepest dimension of our being. In his edifying discourse titled Patiently Gaining One s Soul , Kierkegaard suggested that patience serve as the condition of one s soul-gaining and constitute his soul possessed as the result of it. The paradox of soul-gaining derives from the very being of soul or self as a synthesis of the temporal and the eternal . By virtue of patience, we can expect the eternal result of faith―as defined by Kierkegaard s famous phrase the self is grounded transparently in the Power which posited it ― from the temporal process of self-realization. Kierkegaard s whole works, including the discourses on patience, can be interpreted as a process of practice for making the readers patience grow. I hope the present article also help me and the readers grow in patience. In this regard, it is not an exaggeration to say that patience can be construed as an aim of education.
