국문 초록

『예기』의 한 권인 「악기」는 선진시대의 유가의 예술철학을 대표하는 저작이다. 「악기」에서 樂은 좁은 의미에서의 음악에 국한된다기보다는 그것을 한 부분으로 포함하는 종합예술에 해당한다. 「악기」는 『여씨춘추』와 순자의 「악론」으로 계승되는 악에 관한 전통적 견해, 즉 ‘악은 도의 표현’이라는 견해를 계승하면서도, 악의 중요성을 강조하여, 그것이 예와 대등한 지위를 가진다는 견해를 명확하게 표명하고 있다. 무엇보다도 「악기」는 악의 성격과 기능을 ‘악의 상징론’으로 상세화하고 있다. 이 상징론에 의하면, 악은 인간의 자연적 본성과 문화적 본성간의 조화 또는 일치를 추구함으로써, 교육과 정치에 있어서 유가적 삶의 이상을 추구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 「악기」의 견해는 ‘상징을 통한 심성함양’의 전형적 사례를 보여주며, 또한 오늘날 서구의 이른바 ‘순수예술’과는 달리, 예술의 가치는 근본적으로 심성함양과 그것을 통한 이상적 사회의 실현에 있다는 점을 드러낸다.

영문 초록

‘Record of Music’ in Li Ki[禮記] has been regarded as the work representing the philosophy of art of confucianism. In this work, music[樂] refers to not the music of narrow sense but the comprehensive art that includes music as a part of it. While maintaining the traditional view of music, which is inherited in Lu-shih Ch’un-ch’iu[呂氏春秋] and ‘on music’ of Xun Zi [荀子], ‘Record of Music’ clearly presents the correlation of Ritual[禮] and Music. Above all, It reveals the nature and function of music by means of symbolism of music. According to this symbolism, The meanings of five notes, melodies and harmonies, which are basic components of music, have the symbolic relations to the emotions and feelings of mind, and further, to the political realities of society. In these complex symbolic relation, music is aimed at pursuing the ideals of confucianism in both spheres of education and politics, by seeking harmony or unity between human nature and cultural nature, which is called ‘the harmony of heaven and earth’. This view of Record of Music shows a typical example of cultivating a mind through symbolism . In contrast to today s notion of pure arts , it reveals the art is not for itself, it is not the end in itself, but the symbol for the cultivating mind, and for realizing of ideal society. This is the most notable point of ‘Record of Music’, i.e., music or art is by nature the pedagogical symbolism.
