인성의 의미와 인성교육의 과제

국문 초록

이 글은 인성교육진흥법이 명시하고 있는 것처럼 인성을 모종의 역량으로 규정하는 것이 과연 타당한가 하는 문제를 인성에 관한 두 가지 대안적 관점들에 비추어 검토하고 그 결과로부터 인성교육에 관한 시사점을 이끌어내기 위한 것이다. 인성을 사실로서 접근하는 이른바 유명론적 관점은 피아제(Jean Piajet, 1896-1980)의 도덕심리학이론으로 대표되며, 이 이론에서 인성은 개인의식에 바탕을 둔 자율성으로 규정된다. 인성을 온전한 자아에 대한 신념으로서 접근하는 이른바 실념론적 관점은 성리학과 기독교 사상으로 대표되며, 여기서 인성은 자발성으로 규정된다. 피아제의 논의는 자아의 의미를 개인으로 한정하고 있다는 점에서 행위자와 도덕규칙의 올바른 관계를 보여주고 있지 못하며, 행위자와 도덕규칙의 다같은 목적이 되는 보편적 자아의 개념을 상정하고 있는 성리학과 기독교 사상은 양자의 올바른 관계를 보여주고 있다. 인성에 관한 이러한 대안적 관점들에 비추어 볼 때 인성교육의 과제는 특정한 핵심가치나 덕목을 길러주는 일에서 찾을 것이 아니라 자아에 대한 관점을 전향하기 위한 다양한 교과교육에서 찾아져야 한다.

영문 초록

This study reviews the issue of whether it is appropriate to define the character of a human being as a competency as stated by the Character Education Promotion Act in light of two alternative views about character, and draws implications about character education based on the results. The so-called nominalistic view that approaches character as a fact is represented by the moral psychology theory of Jean Piaget(1896-1980), where character is defined as autonomy based on individual consciousness. The so-called realistic view that approaches a character as a belief about a whole and well-balanced self is represented by Neo-Confucianism and Christianity, where character is defined as spontaneity. Piaget’s argument does not show a proper relationship between the agent and moral rules as it limits the meaning of self to individuals, while Neo-Confucianism and Christianity, which presume the concept of a universal self that is the same purpose of both the agent and moral rules, show a proper relationship between the two. Considering these alternative views about character, the challenge of character education must be found not in cultivating certain core values or virtues, but in various subject curricula that can transform views about the self.
