서세동점과 위원·엄복의 대응

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 19세기 중엽 서양의 제국주의 세력이 중국을 주 타깃으로 삼아 동아시아를 침략했던 이른바 ‘서세동점’에 대해 초기에 대응한 위원(魏源)과 엄복(嚴復)의 철학을 고찰하는데 있다. 필자는 ‘서세동점’으로 야기된 중국근대철학 을 연구하는데 있어서 다음과 같은 문제점이 있다고 생각한다. 첫째, 중국근대철학 이 발생된 역사적 계기는 ‘아편전쟁’이지만, 어떤 사람부터 시작되었는지에 대해선 명확하게 제시하지 않고 있다. 둘째, 엄복은 위원의 주장을 처음으로 충실하게 수 행하였으며, 이후에 전개된 중국철학과 현대신유학의 발원에 커다란 영향을 끼쳤다 는 점이 간과되고 있다. 셋째, 중국의 근대역사 혹은 철학사를 ‘서세동점’에 의한 일방적인 ‘서양수용’의 관점으로 보고 있다. 이 세 가지 문제에 대해 해명하는 것 이 이 논문의 내용이다. 그 내용은, 우선 중국근대철학은 ‘서세동점’에 대응해서 “오랑캐의 장기를 배워 오 랑캐를 제압하자”는 명제를 주장한 위원부터 시작된다는 점과 엄복이 처음으로 위 원의 주장을 충실하게 수행했고, 엄복의 서양수용의 방식은 이후 중국철학과 현대 신유학의 탄생에 커다란 영향을 끼쳤다는 점, 마지막으로 ‘서세동점’의 역사는 일방 적인 ‘서양수용’이 아니라, 서양의 중국화 혹은 중서문화의 융합과정이라는 점을 밝 혔다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the article is to examine the philosophy of Wei Yuan and Yan Fu who initially responded to the so-called the eastern penetration of western powers , which meant the invasion of Western imperialist powers to the East Asia containing China in the mid-19th century. I think there are the following problems in studying modern Chinese philosophy caused by the eastern penetration of western powers . First, the historical trigger for modern Chinese philosophy is the Opium War , but it has not been clearly presented as to from whom it was originated. Second, it has been overlooked that Yan Fu carried out Wei Yuan s argument faithfully for the first time and Wei Yuan’s argument had a great influence on the origin of the subsequent development of Chinese philosophy and new Confucianism. Third, China s modern history or philosophy history is viewed from the perspective of one-sided acceptance of western culture by the eastern penetration of western powers . It is the content of this paper to explain these three questions. The content is that modern Chinese philosophy begins with Wei Yuan, who insisted on the proposition to learn the strong points of western barbarians and thereby to conquer them in response to the the eastern penetration of western powers , and Yan Fu s method of acceptance of western culture for the first time faithfully carried out Wei Yuan s argument, which later influenced Chinese philosophy and new Confucianism greatly. Finally, it is revealed that the history of the eastern penetration of western powers is not a one-sided acceptance of western culture , but a process of western Chineseization or the fusion of Chinese culture.
