국문 초록

본 논문은 그동안 학문의 영역에서 등한시되었던 지각적으로 사고하는 인지의 한 방식인 시각적 사고에 대하여 논의하였다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 시각적 사고가 구체적으로 무엇인지, 그 작동의 기제는 기존의 논리적 사고와는 어떻게 차이가 나는지, 시각적 사고의 주요 특징은 어떤 것이 있는지를 중심으로 논의를 전개하였다. 우선 일반적인 의미에서 시각적 사고는 시각적 이미지를 사용하여 정보를 처리하는 인지적 과정이라고 정의할 수 있다. 논리적 사고와 대비되는 인지의 한 방식으로서의 시각적 사고는 지각적으로 사고하는, 즉 지각의 능동적이고 지능적인 인지적 과정이라고 규정할 수 있다. 시각적 사고의 주요 특성은 다음과 같다: 우리의 인지에서는 지각이 우선적이다. 지각은 수동적 과정이 아니라, 사고를 포함하는 지능적이고 창의적인 인지과정이다. 지각은 실시간적으로 환경과 상호작용하는 역동적 정보처리과정을 포함한다. 그리고 마지막으로 지각은 항상 의미 관련성을 보인다. 시각적 사고 개념에 대한 논의는 비언어적으로 사고하는 우리 인간의 인지의 한 방식을 이해하는데 중요한 이론적 기초를 제공하고, 이를 통해 문화, 예술 그리고 소소한 일상적 삶의 이야기들을 학문적으로 담아낼 수 있는 인지 틀을 제공하는 데 크게 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This paper addresses visual thinking which is one mode of cognition that thinks perceptually, and which has been largely neglected in the academic disciplines. This paper discusses what specifically is visual thinking, how its mechanism differs from the conventional logical thinking, and what are the important characteristics of visual thinking. In a broad sense, visual thinking can be defined as cognitive process of handling information through visual images. In a narrow sense, visual thinking is a mode of perception that is in contrast to logical thinking, and it is an active, intelligent cognitive process of perception. The important characteristics of visual thinking are as follows: Perception is foremost in our cognition. Perception is not a passive process, but an intelligent and creative cognitive process that includes thinking. Perception includes information processing process that dynamically interacts with the environment in real time. Lastly, perception always has semantic relationships. Discussion on the concept of visual thinking provides important theoretical basis for understanding one mode of human cognition of humans who think nonverbally, and will greatly contribute to more meaningful and valuable living by expanding the breadth of human experience.
