국문 초록

1980년대 이래 박물관과 공동체와의 관계 강화는 전세계적으로 박물관계의 주요 화두가 되어 왔다. 이는 박물관의 존재의의를 그 사회적 역할 속에서 찾는 새로운 박물관 담론의 영향으로, 단지 박물관과 공동체의 교류가 강화되는 수준을 넘어 박물관의 미션과 운영방식 전반에 걸친 변화를 촉진하는 흐름으로 이어졌다. 커뮤니티 박물관은 20세기 중반 지역사회의 문화와 역사의 보존을 위해 지역 공동체가 주도적으로 설립한 박물관의 형태로 출발하였다. 소장품 관련 활동 중심의 전통적 박물관과 달리 그 태생부터 공동체 정체성을 강화하고 지역의 사회문화적 구심점 역할이 부여되는 특징을 보였다. 따라서 이러한 커뮤니티 박물관은 박물관과 지역사회의 연계가 부각된 20세기 후반부터 더욱 주목을 받았으며, 사회적 역할을 둘러싼 새로운 박물관 패러다임의 진전으로 그 역할을 더욱 확장해왔다. 국내에서도 최근 박물관과 지역사회의 관계 강화 및 지역공동체 육성 방안으로 ‘마을박물관’이라는 명칭 하에 커뮤니티 박물관 사업이 실천되고 있다. 하지만 커뮤니티 박물관의 필요성에 대한 관심과 실천은 확산된 데 반해, 커뮤니티 박물관의 이념과 목적을 충분히 실현하는 사례는 드문 현실이다. 이러한 문제 해결을 위해서는 실제 사례에 대한 실증적 연구를 바탕으로 한 현대적 커뮤니티 박물관의 특수성과 역할에 대한 고찰이 필요한 바, 본 논문에서는 참여적 방법론을 통해 공동체 역량강화를 성공적으로 달성하여 큰 영향력을 자랑하는 미국 윙루크 뮤지엄에 대한 사례를 분석하였다. WLM은 공동체의 참여를 전시를 비롯한 박물관 운영 전반에 실천하여, 공동체의 다양한 목소리를 반영하고 지역사회의 요구에 대응하는 사회참여적 커뮤니티 박물관의 모델이 되고 있다. 오늘날 박물관에 있어서 참여와 관련한 담론이 널리 확산되기는 하였으나, WLM은 공동체에 기획의 주도권을 부여하는 정도와 참여적 실천에 대한 높은 전문성으로 인해 특별한 주목을 받고 있다. 전면적인 권한공유를 바탕으로, WLM은 공동체의 정체성 형성, 유대감과 자긍심 강화라는 커뮤니티 박물관 고유의 역할을 더욱 확장하고 있다. 즉 지역사회의 이슈들에 대한 논의를 주도하는 플랫폼이자 사회적 변화를 견인하는 구심점으로서 21세기 커뮤니티 박물관에 요구되는 이념과 역할을 구현하고 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

Since the 1980’s, strengthening ties with its community has been the keyword for the museum field. This was influenced by the new museum paradigm that seeks to increase the social role of museums and resulted in the museum readjusting its mission and practices to this new aim. Community museums are institutions established as an effort by the community to preserve its history and culture. Due to this independent nature, it differentiates itself from the traditional museum and is largely related to forming community identity and acting as a local cultural center. Therefore, community museums have become the subject of greater interest since the late 20th century when community engagement surged as an essential mission of the contemporary museum. Also the role of community museums expanded due to the new paradigm in the museum field. In Korea, community museums in the name of ‘village museums’ have increased recently, as an endeavor to develop and strengthen local communities. However, although the interest and need for community museums has grown, it is still difficult to find cases where the purpose and philosophy of community museums are actually fulfilled. This is partly due to the lack of detailed case studies examining the conditions and role of contemporary community museums. Therefore in this article, the case of Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience is analyzed as a model example that realizes community empowerment through extensive community participation and sharing of authority. In today s museum, it is not difficult to find community participation, however what makes WLM stand out is its level of participation and also the high professionalism regarding such participatory practice. Based on this aspect, WLM is moving beyond the traditional role of community museums, such as formation of identity, increasing sense of belonging and self-esteem. It acts as a platform for the community’s current issues and as a social anchor for community regeneration: in that sense, WLM is fulfilling and redefining the role of community museums of the 21st century.
