국문 초록

본고는 한국 고대 제철공정에 대한 제반 문제를 중국과의 비교적 시각에서 재검토해 보고 그동안 불합리하게 제시되었던 제철공정도의 일부를 최근의 연구 성과들을 근거로 새롭게 수정하여 보다 타당한종합적 안을 제시하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 중국의 경우 1970년대에 이중(李衆)에 의해 고대 제철공정도가 제시된 이후 여러 연구자들이 이와 관련된 의견을 제시하였으나 여전히 선철 중심의 제철공정안을 고수하는 가운데 학자들 간의 이해체계에적지 않은 괴리가 있을 뿐만 아니라 일정부분 수정이 필요하다는 사실도 파악하였다. 한국의 경우 1980년부터 중국의 견해를 기초로 우리나라 고대 제철공정을 그와 유사한 체계로 이해하기 시작한 이후 그러한 경향이 최근까지도 지속되고 있음을 지적하고 공정상의 여섯 가지 문제들, 즉1. 원료 준비, 2. 제련 생성물 성격, 3. 선철 관련 공정의 이해, 4. 조재제 투입의 유무, 5. 열처리 여부, 6. 고철의 재활용 등에 관한 사항들을 집중적으로 논하였다. 그러한 과정에 그와 관련된 조사 및 분석자료들을 검토하고 현대의 제철공정과도 비교하면서 4단계로 분류하는 한국 고대 제철공정도의 수정안을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

In this paper, a new comprehensive scheme concerning the iron making process of ancient Korea is suggested through a comparative study with the situation of China. This is carried out by re-examining key issues concerning the ancient iron-making processes of Korea, some of which have been based on unreasonable interpretations, based on existing research results. In the 1970s, after Li Zhong proposed a scheme for the Chinese ancient iron-making process, various opinions were presented by Chinese researchers. However, due to the fact that the idea of a ‘pig iron-oriented iron making system’ continued to persist, there were many inherent problems. It can also be noted that a considerable gap existed among the frameworks of scholars for understanding the steelmaking process in China, and therefore there was a need for some modifications. In Korea, the Chinese understanding of the iron making process came to be adopted from the 1980s, and even until recently, it was believed that a similar process was relavant to Korea s ancient steelmaking process. The focus of researchers was centered upon six issues regarding this process: the preparation of raw materials, the nature of the smelting products, an understanding of the processes related to pig iron, the presence of crude products, heat treatment, and the recycling of scrap iron. An amendment to the ancient Korean steelmaking process was proposed by reviewing the existing research and analysis data relating to such processes and by presenting evidence for new interpretations. A comparative analysis with the conditions of the modern ironmaking process is another characteristic of the present research.
