국문 초록

지난 60 여 년 동안 다문화주의 담론은 미국사회에 광범위하게 영향을 미쳐왔다. 기업, 시장, 교실에서 인종적 다양성이 지닌 이점을 다룬 사회과학 문헌에서부터 학계에 이르기까지 다문화주의는 하나의 정치‧사회적 운동으로서 그리고 주요한 담론으로서 미국에서 성공적이었다고 평가된다. 이와 동시에 문화인류학자들은 다문화주의 개념이 지닌 한계들을 지적해왔다. 다문화주의는 사회 속에서 특정 형태들을 표상할 수 있게 해준 반면에, 다른 한편으로 그것은 문화적 차이들을 드러내는 것을 하지 못하도록 만들기도 한다. 근본적인 차이에 대한 인류학적 이해들과 비서구문화들을 연구하면서도 서구문화들이 전제하는 가정에 대해 문제제기하는 인류학의 방법은 우리가 미국에서의 다문화주의 담론에 대해 보다 비판적으로 사고하는 데 기여할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Multiculturalism discourse has been widespread and influential in U.S. society for the past 60 years. The current social science literature on the benefits of ethnic diversity in the business world, in the marketplace, in the classroom, and in academia also points to the successes of multiculturalism as a political and social movement and as a key discourse in the U.S. At the same time, however, cultural anthropologists point to the limits of the concept of multiculturalism. While multiculturalism opens up the social arena for particular kinds of representation in society, it also constrains the way in whichcultural differences are allowed to be expressed. Anthropological understandings of radical difference and its method of questioning the assumptions of western cultures even as it studies non-western cultures can help us to think more critically about multiculturalism discourse in the U.S.
