인성함양의 관점에서 고찰한 퇴계의 리발설과 율곡의 기질변화론

국문 초록

퇴계·율곡의 철학과 인성교육을 접목한 기존의 연구는 대개 이론이나 구체적 방법론 탐구의 한 측면에 치중함으로써 이론과 실제의 연결 고리가 느슨하다는 공통된 문제점을 가지고 있다. 본고에서는 이러한 기존 연구의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 퇴계 ‘理發說’의 함의와 인성함양의 관계를 밝히고 이를 토대로 퇴계가 제시한 인성함양의 방법과 실제를 살펴 보았다. 다음으로 율곡의 ‘기질변화론’과 이를 중심으로 하는 인성함양 방법을 살피고 퇴계·율곡의 철학이 현대 인성함양에 있어 어떤 점에서 유의미한지 고찰하였다. 퇴계는 리발설을 통해 순선한 본성이 우리에게 내재해 있고 그 본성이 心의 핵심이자 도덕적 의식과 행동을 발생시키는 원동력임을 제시한다. 그러면서 도덕 주체 확립을 인성함양의 토대로 삼고 ‘리’와 ‘사단’에 기반을 둔 도덕 행위의 완성을 추구한다. 하지만 인성 함양의 실제에 있어서 퇴계는 기질의 문제에 집중한다. 이에 따라 퇴계는 인성함양의 체계를 ‘거경’을 중심으로 제시하면서 動時와 靜時를 포괄하는 인성함양 방법을 수립하였다. 또한 거경에 입각한 구체적 인성함양의 실천 방법으로 ‘灑掃應對’와 ‘靜坐’를 제시하고 있다. 율곡은 본성 회복의 역할을 氣에 부여하고 기질의 변화를 통해 인성을 함양하고자 하였다. 율곡은 도덕 행위 발출 機制를 ‘氣發理乘→情→意→행위’의 단일 경로로 제시하는 한 편, 기질변화에 있어 情에서 意로 이어지는 부분에 집중하여 意의 참됨을 추구하였다. 이에 따라 인성함양의 핵심을 ‘리의 지각과 誠意’에 두고 理를 근거로 변화된 순선한 心意를 도덕 행위의 동기로 삼고자 하였으며, 이에 따라 인성 함양의 실제에 있어 立志와 讀書를 강조하였다. 리발설을 중심으로 하는 퇴계의 인성함양론과 기질변화론을 중심으로 하는 율곡의 인성함양론은 매우 이질적인 것으로 비춰지기 쉬우나 양자 모두 인성함양의 실제를 氣 상에서 추구한다는 점에서 동일하다. 퇴계의 거경과 율곡의 誠意 모두 체화된 자기 주재력을 의미하고 이를 통해 ‘기’의 변화를 추구하는 것이다.

영문 초록

Previous studies which relate education for humanity to philosophy of Toegye and Yulgok have a common problem that connection between theory and practice are loose. To solve this problem, this study firstly tried to show the relation between Toegye s self-expression of principle and education for humanity as well as practices based on that relation. Secondly, this study strives to examine Yulgok s transforming the temperament and self cultivation methods. Thirdly, this study listed the current messages from two great philosophers to modern education for humanity. Toegye, by the theory of self-expression of principle, asserted that good human nature is the driving force of morality and ethical behavior. He also said that establishment of morality should be based on the principle of human nature. When it comes to the practice of education for humanity, however, he focused on the issue of temperament. And he suggested reserving Reverence(居敬) based on his own theory. Yulgok tried to cultivate himself by transforming the temperament. He argued that in his theory of behavior, temperament expresses itself and the principle follows. The result is emotion, and it leads to the will and behavior in sequence. He focused on the junction between emotion and will, trying to making the will sincere. Although there seems to be a contradiction between the theory of Toegye and that of Yulgok, they have common belief that education for humanity should be pursued in the perspective of temperament in practice. Reserving Reverence(居敬) and making the will sincere(誠意) both seek to transform the temperament in good way. In conclusion, to these philosophers, the ground of education for humanity is concerned with principle whereas methodology of that education is in relation with temperament.
