모두를 위한 다문화 교육?

국문 초록

본고는 현재 미국의 다문화주의가 겪고 있는 위기를 이해하고 그것이 우리의 다문화교육 논의에 어떤 시사점을 주는지를 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 스튜어트 홀이 제안한 사회 위기 이론을 바탕으로, 본 연구는 미국 다문화교육의 위기를 구성하는 두 가지 사회운동을 추출해 내고 그들의 역사적인 흐름을 추적했다. 하나는 지배적인 형태로 미국 사회 전면에 나타나고 있는 다문화주의 흐름이고, 또 다른 하나는 그 이면에 잠재적으로 남아 있던 공통문화주의 흐름이다. 이 두 흐름을 역사적으로 추적해서 분석해 본 결과 현재 미국 사회가 겪고 있는 다문화주의의 위기의 근저에는 다문화주의에 의해서 지양된 것으로 보였던 공통문화주의의 흐름이 온존해 있었다는 사실이 명백해졌다. 또한, 본 연구는 공통문화주의의 흐름이 다문화주의가 행사하는 지적-도덕적 지도력(헤게모니)을 우회하는 방식으로 다시 역사의 전면에 등장했고, 그것이 현재의 위기를 구성하는 주요 요소가 되고 있음을 보였다. 미국 다문화교육의 위기에 대한 이러한 분석은 한국 사회의 다문화교육의 논의가 다문화주의의 틀에서만 논의되기보다는 한국의 민족문화와의 관계 속에서 이루어져야 한다는 중요한 시사점을 제공하고 있다.

영문 초록

This essay is an attempt to understand the nature of the crisis of multicultural education of USA and its implication to the South Korean multicultural education project. By exploiting social crisis theory suggested by Stuart Hall, this study firstly identify the two different social movements that constitute the current crisis; Americanization campaign and multiculturalism. Then, this essay traced the historical trajectory of the two. The analyses reveal that Americanization campaign is a major force which, ironically, brood the emergence of the multiculturalism. The Americanization campaign as an expression of racism has not been vanished right away when multiculturalism emerged as a new hegemonic force but it has re-emerged when the multicultural project was hampered by various variables. By and large, American society is experiencing a particular stage of the crisis of multiculturalism. Debunking the myth of American multicultural model, this study, I believe, provide South Koreans who are pursuing the construction of diverse but harmonious society with critical insight; multiculturalism should be discussed and implemented based on the deliberate dialogue between multiculturalism and our common culture.
