국문 초록

상징의 역사는 모든 사물에 상징적 의미가 부여될 수 있음을 보여준다. 상징이나 원형은 인류의 심리에 깊이 뿌리박고 있어서 우리는 그것에 본능적으로 반응하게 된다. 상징은 정확하게 정의되거나 완벽하게 설명될 수 없는 무의식의 측면을 지니게 된다. 본 연구에서는 코끼리가 갖는 상징적 의미를 생물학적인 측면, 인류사적인 측면 그리고 신화와 전설, 종교적인 측면에서 확충해 보고자 했다. 이와 함께 유아와 아동의 모래상자에 나타난 코끼리의 상징적 의미를 살펴보고자 했다. 첫째, 생물학적인 측면에서 코끼리는 복잡한 인지능력과 다양한 감정을 느끼고 표현할 수 있는 능력이 있으며 가족단위의 공동체 생활을 하는데 인간사회와 마찬가지로 매우 복잡하고 섬세한 관계를 이루고 있었다. 둘째, 인류사적인 측면에서 코끼리는 부족의 상징, 재판관의 역할, 군사적 목적 등 강력한 힘의 상징으로 여겨졌으며 편견과 선입견의 대상이 되기도 하였다. 역사적 사실과 문헌에 기록된 내용들은 코끼리가 얼마나 인간의 삶과 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있었는지를 보여주었다. 셋째, 신화와 전설, 종교적인 측면에서 코끼리는 지혜와 현명함의 상징이었으며 아프리카의 토테미즘, 브라만교와 불교에서 영적인 지식과 평안, 경건하고 신성한 존재로 경외심과 숭배의 대상이 되어왔음을 알 수 있었다. 유아와 어린 아동의 모래놀이치료에서 등장하는 코끼리는 강력한 힘, 공동체적 생활 그리고 모성성이라는 상징적인 의미를 보여주었다.

영문 초록

The history of symbols tells us that every object can be given symbolic meanings . Symbols or archetypes are rooted so deep in the psychology of humanity that humans instinctively react to them. These symbols have aspects related to the unconscious that cannot be precisely defined or fully explained . This study amplified the symbolic meanings of elephants in terms of biology, human history, mythology, legend and religions. Along with this. it reviewed the symbolic meanings of elephants that appear in sandplay therapy of infants and young children. First. in the aspect of biology elephants have ability to feel and express various kinds of emotions along with a complex cognitive ability. A society of elephants consists of very complex and delicate relationships as a human society does. Second, in the aspect of human history elephants were regarded as powerful force like a symbol of the tribe . a role of executioner . an important role in wars. Also. elephants became the objects of prejudices and stereotypes . Historical facts and related records found in various kinds of literature tell us the close relationship between elephants and humans. Third. in the aspect of mythology, legends and religions elephants were a symbol of wisdom and intelligence. Elephants were regarded as a symbol of spiritual knowledge and sacredness in totemism. Brahmanism and Buddhism. The symbolism of elephants that appear in sandplay therapy of infants and young children represented powerful force. community life and motherhood.
