모래놀이 치료에서의 ‘다리’ 상징에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

상징은 주로 의식을 초월한 내용에 대한 심상으로 그것을 매개로 하여 다른 것을 알게 하는 작용을 한다. 상징은 인류의 출현이후 모든 시대와 문명을 거치면서 각 개인에게 강력한 영향력을 미쳐왔는데 인간이 만든 구조물 가운데 ‘다리 는 ‘건너다 라는 표현과 짝지어 연상되며 시 대와 지역, 문화를 막론하고 유사한 의미를 내포하는 것으로 보인다. 모래놀이치료 상자에도 여러 가지 의미와 목적을 가진 다리가 등장한다. 본 연구에서는 구조물로서의 다리와 상징적 존재로서의 다리에 관해 고찰하고 연령대와 심리적 과제가 서로 다른 내담자들의 모래놀이치료에 나타난 다리의 상징적 의미를 살펴보았다. 다리는 경관을 이루는 특별한 존재로 시각적, 기술적 의미에 더하여 역사, 정치, 문화적 의미와 예술적 가치를 갖는다. 다리는 상징적으로 새로운 세 계와의 연결과 만남을 의미함과 동시에 이별, 분리, 아쉬움과 연결된다. 답교놀이나 놋다리밟기 같은 풍속은 다리예 집단적 소망성취의 바램을 부여한 것이며, 사찰의 다리는 초월적 존재와의 연결매체로 여겨진다. 다리를 건너는 행위는 통과의례의 3단계와 일치하는 것으로 다리는 그 자체가 통과의 례의 상징성을 갖는다. 모래놀이치료 상자에 올려진 다리는 불안정한 애착을 보상하는 연결매체로, 침범하는 외부에너지들로부터 자신을 분리시키는 수단으로, 사춘기 청소년 의 통과의례 여정을 이끄는 길잡이로, 개성화를 향하는 길목으로, 이승과 저승, 의식과 무의식 을 통합하는 지점으로 등장하면서 개인의 성장과 통합을 향한 전환점으로 작용했다.

영문 초록

Symbols are mainly the images for the content that transcends the conscious and serve a role as media through which other things are revealed. Symbols have exercised a strong influence on each of individuals throughout all the ages and civilizations since the emergence of human beings. Among man- made structures, bridges are associated with the expression related to the act of crossing and seem to imply a similar meaning regardless of time, place and culture. In sand trays for sandplay therapy, too, there often appear bridges with different meanings and purposes. This study reviewed the features of bridges as structures and as symbolic beings, and looked into the symbolic meanings of the bridges that appeared in the sand trays of clients who have different ages and psychological tasks. Bridges are special beings in that they are an important element of landscape and they have historical, political and cultural significance and artistic value as well as visual and technological importance. The symbolic meanings of bridges are related to the connection and encounter with a new world and at the same time, they are also associated with parting, separation and wistful feeling. In Korean traditional customs bridges are imbued with a collective desire for the fulfillment of wishes, while Buddhist temple bridges are considered as media for the connection with a transcendental being. The act of crossing a bridge follows the process corresponding with the three phases of initiation; therefore, the symbolic meaning of an initiation is found in bridges themselves. Bridges placed on sand trays played different roles as follows: a medium of connection to compensate for an unstable attachment, a means to separate the client himself from the external energy that penetrates into him, a guide leading the j ourney to the initiation for an adolescent, a path to individuation and a point where this world and the underworld, the conscious and the unconscious are integrated. In all these cases, bridges served as a turning point toward personal growth and integration.
