국문 초록

This Study is ‘A study on the characteristics of artwork by Jo, Hee-Ryong focused on his maehwa paintings'. Jo, Hee-Ryong was one of the common artists that grew during the late period of Joseon. He accepted traditional ‘Namjong-Mooninhwa', but through the strong self-consciousness and subjective point of view, extended his knowledge, thus developed ‘Muninhwa' into one independent art field. When looking at his ink pictures of orchids, though his previous works resemble the works of kim, Jeong-hee, his latter works show that he became contrary to kim, Jeong-hee and created his own world of art. From the cultural Confucianism of Joseon, which considered ‘the pursuit of goodness’ as the highest of worth, he took in ‘the theory of spiritual nature’ and founded an independent field of art which showed ‘a love for beauty' based on recognition of beauty, which was an unknown feature at that time. He drew different styles at the same time. He showed different drawing styles according to sizes and types of work, such as an axis, connected folding screen and small piece of painting. He depicted more free style image by containing simple and nature features rather than manipulating composition intentionally, with rougher image representing magnificence, ascending spirit, and radical expression of full inspiration through experimental mind which constantly studied expression methods about an object in various angles. So, mind and scriptural characteristics literary artists and Jo, Hee-Ryong would like to express from good tradition as well as a hobby should be reminded in these days.
